Raiders sign Anderson
Running back C.J. Anderson has signed with the Oakland Raiders and could be in their backfield for Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Raiders coach Jon Gruden said that the move is insurance in case Doug Martin isn’t available. The Raiders primary running back since Marshawn Lynch went on injured reserve with a groin injury in mid-October, Martin is nursing a sore knee and his status is uncertain.
“Although we think he’ll be ready to go we can’t take any precautions,” Gruden said Wednesday. “We have to be ready. We have four games left to play and the Steelers blitz almost every play, so we needed a back. Fortunately for us C.J. Anderson was available and we’re happy to have him.”
A Pro Bowl back with Denver in 2014 when he had nearly 1,200 all-purpose yards, Anderson was released by the Carolina Panthers Nov. 12 and had tryouts with Kansas City and Detroit before signing a deal with the Raiders for the remainder of this season.
Penguins, Senators
trade minor leaguers
OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) – The Ottawa Senators have acquired defenseman Stefan Elliott and forward Tobias Lindberg in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Macoy Erkamps and forward Ben Sexton.
The swap of minor leaguers was announced Wednesday.
Elliott and Lindberg will report to the American Hockey League’s Belleville Senators. Sexton and Erkamps have been assigned to the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
The 27-year-old Elliott has eight goals and 16 assists in 84 NHL games with Colorado, Arizona and Nashville. He last appeared in the NHL in April 2016 with the Predators.
Wild Things re-sign catcher Pollock
The Wild Things announced Wednesday the re-signing of catcher Kyle Pollock for his fourth season in Washington.
Pollock returns to the Frontier league after being named a midseason all-star in 2017 and 2018. Like pitcher Zach Strecker, Pollock will be trying to become the organization’s first three time all-star this season.
Pollock made a league-leading 82 starts behind the plate last season. His consistency translated to a career year; 22 doubles, 11 home runs, 56 RBI and 56 walks. Pollock also broke the record for catching the most career games for the Wild Things.
“We have always emphasized the value of a great catcher and the demeanor necessary to shoulder the position. Kyle has developed into the player, leader and critic that helps keep us on track.” said Wild Things assistant GM Tony Buccilli. “Beyond being recognized as among the best catchers in the league, Kyle is one of the best catchers in Wild Things history. He is one of our biggest competitors and naturally holds others accountable. It may be overlooked from afar but Pollock’s presence is a big part of our continued success in Washington.”
