W&J’s Wolf named
first team All-America
Washington & Jefferson College sophomore wide receiver Andrew Wolf was named to the American Football Coaches Association Division III All-America First Team on Monday.
Wolf extends the Presidents’ three-year streak of having a wide receiver selected to the AFCA All-America team, joining two-time AFCA All-American Jesse Zubik. The Presidents have been represented 21 times on the AFCA All-America list with 18 different players being recognized.
The only underclassmen to be selected to the first team, Wolf established himself as one of the nation’s top offensive threats. The 6-1 inch speedster had 79 catches and led NCAA Division III with 1,339 receiving yards and 21 receiving touchdowns. The 21 touchdowns set PAC and W&J single-season records.
Wolf scored at least one touchdown in nine different games and had eight 100-yard receiving games. He began 2018 with a season-high 214 yards and three touchdowns in a 37-12 season-opening W&J win at St. John Fisher. Wolf also set a career high with four receiving scores in a 62-10 victory over Grove City.
Royals add speed with Hamilton
The Kansas City Royals and speedy outfielder Billy Hamilton have agreed to a $5.25 million contract for next season that includes up to $1 million in incentives, a person familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press Monday.
The Royals hope that spacious Kauffman Stadium will allow Hamilton to better use his speed than the bandbox of Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, where he spent his first six seasons with the Reds. The person who confirmed the deal spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because the deal was pending a physical.
The 28-year-old Hamilton made his big league debut in 2013, then proceeded to have four consecutive seasons in which he stole at least 50 bases.
Klieman to follow Snyder at K-State
Kansas State has hired Chris Klieman of North Dakota State to lead its football program, passing the reins from retired Hall of Fame coach Bill Snyder to someone with three Football Championship Subdivision titles but little Big 12 experience.
Klieman was hired Monday to lead the Bison by Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor, and was seen as one of the front-runners for the job ever since Snyder announced his retirement.
Klieman agreed to a six-year contract with a base salary of $2.3 million next season, increasing by $200,000 each subsequent season. The deal includes a number of other incentives.
In the NBA
Marcus Morris Sr. had a season-high 31 points, making three quick 3-pointers to start the second half, and Jayson Tatum scored 21 Monday night to lead a depleted Boston lineup to its sixth straight win, a 113-100 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.
- Joel Embiid scored 24 points in his return to the lineup after a one-game absence, Ben Simmons and Furkan Korkmaz added 18 points apiece, and the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Detroit Pistons for the second time in four days, winning 116-102 Monday night.
Jimmy Butler, who had 38 points to lead Philadelphia to a 117-111 victory in Detroit on Friday, exited in the first half with a strained groin and did not return.
In the NHL
Jimmy Howard made a season-high 42 saves and Dylan Larkin scored his 12th goal of the season to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night.
