High school basketball roundup: McGuffey girls edge Charleroi, 35-34

Abby Donnelly scored 14 points, including four three-pointers, and McGuffey edged visiting Charleroi 35-34 in a Class 3A Section 2 girls basketball contest Monday night.
The game was tight throughout as Charleroi (0-2, 2-4) led by two points after one quarter, one point at halftime and by three points, 29-26, entering the fourth quarter. The game wasn’t decided until, with McGuffey (1-1, 2-3) leading 35-33, Charleroi freshman Hannah Keranko was fouled in the act of shooting as time expired. Keranko made one of the ensuing two free throws.
Bella Skobel led Charleroi with 14 points.
Beth-Center 49, Waynesburg 41: Beth-Center built a 12-point halftime lead, then had to fight off a second-half comeback attempt by visiting Waynesburg to edge the Raiders 49-41 in Class 3A Section 2.
The win in the section opener for Beth-Center improved the Bulldogs’ record to 3-1 overall. B-C has won three in a row. Waynesburg fell to 1-1 in section, 3-2 overall and had its three-game winning streak snapped.
Olivia Greco paced B-C with 13 points. Elizabeth Trump followed with 10 points.
Waynesburg’s Clara Paige Miller scored a game-high 16 points.
Peters Township 75, Connellsville 32: Makenna Marisa scored 21 points to pace Peters Township to a 75-32 win over Connellsville in a Section 2 game in Class 6A.
Mackenzie Lehman scored 12 points and Isabella Mills and Journey Thompson each had 11 points for pT (2-0, 5-0).
Connellsville (0-2, 1-3) was led by Baileigh Bishop’s 22 points.
Canon-McMillan 48, Baldwin 44: Tamara Mathis scored 10 of her game-high 15 points in the second half as Canon-McMillan won a back-and-forth contest with Baldwin, 48-44, in Class 6A Section 2.
The game was tight throughout as Canon-McMillan’s largest lead was only five points and Baldwin never led by more than two points. There were 14 lead changes and the score was tied 11 times.
Baldwin (0-2, 2-2) led 20-19 at halftime but C-M forged ahead 32-30 after three quarters. The Highlanders tied the score with about a minute to play but Canon-Mac (2-1, 3-3) won the game by making enough free throws down the stretch.
In addition to Mathis’ 15 points, Nya Williams scored 12 for the Big Macs. Lexi Bernotas had 10 points to lead Baldwin.
Chartiers-Houston 54, Carmichaels 49: Chartiers-Houston forged a 19-point halftime lead before fighting off a wild fourth-quarter comeback by Carmichaels and defeating the Mikes 54-49 in Class 2A Section 3.
Zamierah Edwards scored a game-high 19 points for Chartiers-Houston (1-1, 2-3) and Dominique Mortimer had 12. The Bucs led 11-2 after one quarter and 31-12 at halftime. Carmichaels (1-1, 2-3) outscored C-H 25-13 in the fourth quarter to make it a close game.
Emma Hyatt was Carmichaels’ leading scorer with 18 points and Kylie Sinn followed with 15.
Monessen 61, Geibel Catholic 17: Monessen won its first game of the season, and in dominating fashion, as the Greyhounds rolled to a 61-17 victory over host Geibel Catholic in Class A Section 2.
Monessen (1-1, 1-5) forged a 27-9 lead at halftime, then outscored the Gators 22-2 in the third quarter.
Zykavia Hairston scored 12 points to lead three Monessen players in double figures. Kendelle Weston and Quitarah Hardison each contributed 10 points for the Greyhounds.
Olivia Barnhart was the leading scorer for Geibel (0-2, 0-5) with five points.
Belle Vernon 50, West Mifflin 44: Lindsay Steeber scored 16 points and Belle Vernon remained unbeaten in Class 4A Section 3 with a 50-44 home win over West Mifflin.
Belle Vernon (2-0, 2-3) lost three nonsection games to open the season but has won two in a row in league play. The Leopards used a big first half to defeat West Mifflin (1-1, 2-2). Belle Vernon led 28-16 at halftime.
Rachel Wobrak scored 11 points for the Leopards.
Shelbey Genes led a balanced West Mifflin attack with 11 points.
Mapletown 43, Jeff-Morgan 22: Mapletown outscored Jefferson-Morgan in each quarter to take a 43-22 victory in Section 2-A.
Mapletown (1-1, 1-4) was led by Taylor Dusenberry and Abby Antill, who each scored 10 points. Kelsi Smith pulled down 10 rebounds.
Jefferson-Morgan (0-1, 1-5) was led by Savannah Clark’s 6 points.
Frazier 67, Fort Cherry 51: Frazier used a 20-4 run in the fourth quarter to produce a 67-51 victory over Fort Cherry in Section 3-AA.
Brooke Poling had a game-high 33 points for Frazier (2-0, 3-2). Sierra Twigg tossed in 19 points and Ashley Moger added 12 points.
Alex Guerra scored 15 points and Mackenzie Faure and Abby Cooper each contributed 13 points for Fort Cherry (1-1, 3-2).
Bishop Canevin 82, Bentworth 18: Shamyjha Price scored 20 points and Gillian Gustine had 18 as Bishop Canevin rolled to an 82-18 victory over Bentworth in Class 2A Section 3.
In other games: Washington remained undefeated with a 62-61 victory over visiting South Park in a Class 3A Section 2 game. The Prexies are 2-0 in the section and 5-0 overall. South park slipped to 1-1, 2-3. No game details were made available to the Observer-Reporter.
Boys results
Ringgold 71, Frazier 41: Demetrius scored 22 points and pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds to help Ringgold rout Frazier, 71-41, in a non-section game.
Luke Wyvratt poured in 15 points and Jaden Taylor added 14 points for the Rams (3-1), who led 40-16 at halftime.
Justin Novak led Frazier (3-2) with 17 points.
Quigley Catholic 59, Avella 52: Three Quigley players combined for 47 points, led by Mario Johns’ game-high 23, and the Spartans rallied in the fourth quarter to knock off host Avella, 59-52, in a nonsection game.
Avella (2-3) led 29-27 at halftime and 40-35 after three quarters. Quigley (1-4), however, outscored the Eagles 24-12 in the pivotal fourth quarter.
Alex Tomsic and Dawson Summers each scored 12 points for Quigley. Avella received 22 points from Tyler Cerciello and Dominic Spataro contributed 12.
