W&J hires

Thompson as SID

Washington & Jefferson College announced Friday the selection of Aaron Thompson as its sports information director. Thompson will be responsible for promoting the Presidents’ 26-sport NCAA Division III varsity program.

Thompson comes to W&J from Saint Vincent College, where he has served as the assistant sports information director since August 2014.

This past fall, Thompson was the media coordinator for the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship hosted by Saint Vincent at Duquesne University’s Palumbo Center.

“We are very excited that Aaron is joining our Washington & Jefferson College family,” said W&J athletic director Scott McGuinness. “Aaron will be a valuable member of our communications and marketing team at the college. He is a hard-working professional who has earned the opportunity to run his own sports information office. We expect great things from Aaron and we look forward to working with him to promote the talented student-athletes of W&J College.”

After earning a degree in communications from Waynesburg University in 2012, Thompson spent two years as the graduate assistant in the Waynesburg sports information office. He received a MBA in applied business from WU in 2014.

Harbaugh to return as Ravens coach

John Harbaugh will return to coach the Baltimore Ravens next season, and the team says it’s working on an extension beyond 2019.

Harbaugh took over as Baltimore’s coach in 2008 and has taken the team to the playoffs six times, winning the Super Bowl in 2012.

The Ravens didn’t reach the postseason in each of the past three years, however, and are striving to end that streak with two games left in the regular season.

Regardless of how Baltimore (8-6) finishes, Harbaugh will be back to finish the final year of his current contract.

Beckham ruled out

New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will miss his third straight game with a quad injury. The Giants announced Friday that Beckham, linebacker Alex Ogletree, center Spencer Pulley and receiver Russell Shepard won’t play Sunday when the Giants (5-9) face the Colts (8-6) in Indianapolis.

In the NHL

Reigning MVP Taylor Hall had two goals and two assists and the slumping New Jersey Devils rode their top line in snapping a three-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Friday night.

Kyle Palmieri added a goal and two assists, Nico Hischier had a goal and an assists and the line finished with nine points as the Devils won for only the fourth time in the last 17 games (4-7-6).

  • Tom Wilson broke a tie with seven minutes left, Braden Holtby made 36 saves and the Washington Capitals beat the Buffalo Sabres, 2-1.

Evgeny Kuznetsov started the winning play when he stole the puck from goalie Carter Hutton behind the net. The center quickly fed Wilson just outside of the crease. Wilson has 10 goals in 15 games this season.
