Men’s basketball
Waynesburg University had no answer for the three-point shooting of visiting Muskingum as the Yellow Jackets fell 96-71 in a nonconference game Saturday afternoon at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
Eight different players made at least one three-pointer, and Muskingum went 19 of 34 from behind the arc to score the most points the Yellow Jackets have allowed in a single game this season.
Jalen Paige led the effort for the Muskies, who improve to 5-5 overall, making five three-pointers for 15 points. Devon Peart led all scorers with 19 points.
Waynesburg (3-8) had four players score in double figures. Nate Gearhart and Shane Johnson led the team with 15 points apiece. Brenna Smith scored 14 points and Jake Dougherty finished with 12.
- Michael Hughes pulled down a rebound off a missed free throw in the final seconds as Duquesne held on for an 85-84 overtime victory over Eastern Kentucky.
Erick Williams Jr. hit a jump shot to give Duquesne an 85-83 lead with 14 seconds left in overtime. Eastern Kentucky’s Tre King missed a layup, got his own rebound and was fouled as he went back up with three seconds left. He made the first but missed the second and Hughes’ rebound secured the victory for Duquesne (9-3), which has won five of its last six games.
Williams, who finished with 21 points and 14 rebounds, dropped in two free throws to tie at 79-79 with 18 seconds left in regulation.
Sincere Carry had 14 points and Hughes added 13 to go with nine rebounds for Duquesne.
Referee disciplined
New Jersey’s athletic association said Saturday that a referee who told a high school wrestler to cut his dreadlocks or forfeit, which drew ire from an Olympian, the state’s governor and many others, won’t be assigned to any matches until the incident is reviewed.
Michael Cherenson, spokesman for the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, said the organization had reached out to groups that assign referees “and they’ve all agreed” not to assign Alan Maloney to any event until further notice.
Buena Regional High School wrestler Andrew Johnson, who is black, had a cover over his hair Wednesday night during a match. But Maloney, who is white, said that wouldn’t do. An SNJ Today reporter tweeted a video of Johnson getting his hair cut minutes before the match. Johnson went on to win but appeared visibly distraught.
The video was shared widely on social media, with users calling the incident “racist,” “cruel” and “humiliating.”
