The SERVPRO First Responder Bowl Wednesday between No. 23 Boise State and Boston College was canceled because of the threat of severe weather after a delay of nearly an hour and a half.
The game was stopped with BC leading 7-0 with 5:08 remaining in the first quarter Wednesday at Cotton Bowl Stadium. The delay came not long after AJ Dillon ran 19 yards for a touchdown.
Before the announcement, fans began returning to their seats after a line of severe storms rolled through the area near downtown Dallas. More storms were expected later in the day.
Boise (10-3) was trying for its second straight 11-win season after losing to Fresno State 19-16 in overtime in the Mountain West Conference championship game. The Eagles (7-5) were going for the first eight-win season in six years under coach Steve Addazio.
- Mohamed Ibrahim ran for career-high 224 yards and two touchdowns, leading Minnesota to a 34-10 victory over Georgia Tech in the Quick Lane Bowl.
The Yellow Jackets did not have the speed or strength to slow down Ibrahim and their triple-option offense was stunted in coach Paul Johnson’s finale. The Gophers limited Georgia Tech to 206 yards on the ground after it led the nation with 335 yards rushing per game.
James’ injury
day-to-day
LeBron James got good news Wednesday on his injured groin.
But his games-played streak will end anyway.
An MRI exam showed that the four-time NBA MVP merely strained his left groin in the Los Angeles Lakers’ victory at Golden State Warriors on Christmas night.
James will likely be dealing with soreness for several days, and the Lakers said he won’t travel with them for their game Thursday in Sacramento.
Thursday will mark the first time James has sat since the final game of the 2016-17 regular season, which he took off for rest.
James had appeared in 156 consecutive games, going back to the start of the 2017 playoffs with Cleveland.
James is averaging 27.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.1 assists this season, his 16th in the NBA and first with the Lakers.
Clemson’s Lawrence in limbo
Clemson is preparing to play without star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence when it faces Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl on Saturday. Lawrence and two teammates failed an NCAA test for performance-enhancing drugs.
Tigers defensive coordinator Brent Venables said that as of Wednesday, there had been no change in Lawrence’s status. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney announced Monday the school had been notified by the NCAA about the failed tests.
Swinney said the players were found to have trace amounts of a substance called ostarine, which can act like an anabolic steroid.
The other players are reserve offensive tackle Zach Giella and freshman tight end Braden Galloway. Swinney said additional testing might allow the players to play.
