GIRLS BASKETBALL

Carmichaels 35, Waynesburg 33: Carmichaels outscored Waynesburg by nine points in the second half to down the Raiders 35-33 and win the King Coal Lions’ Christmas Tournament.

Waynesburg (4-4) had a 24-17 lead at the half, but a 10-4 scoring advantage in the third quarter trimmed the Mikes’ deficit to one point.

C.P. Miller led the Raiders with 17 points.

Carmichaels (3-7) was paced by a game-high 19 points from Gina Ranieri.

Mapletown 51, Propel Andrew Street 23: After starting the season 0-4, Mapletown won its third consecutive game and the Bentworth tournament by defeating Propel Andrew Street 51-23.

Abby Antill led the Maples with 15 point as they took a 18-6 lead into halftime. Antill was named the tournament MVP. Kelsey Smith had 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Mapletown (3-4). Kayla Smith, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored seven points.

Most of the offense generated by Propel Andrew Street (3-4) came from Keeley Brockington, who scored a game-high 16 points.

Avella 43, New Brighton 14: Giving up its fewest points in a single game this season, Avella bounced back after a tough opening-round loss to defeat New Brighton, 43-14, in the consolation game of the Rochester tournament.

The Eagles limited New Brighton (1-7) to three or fewer points in three of the four quarters. They led 19-5 at halftime.

Alyssa Hunt scored half of the points for New Brighton, finishing with seven.

Avella (6-2) was paced by a game-high 10 points from Colleen Kinney. Jordan Rush also finished with nine points.

Carlynton 50, Fort Cherry 26: Angelica Diallo scored 10 points and Carlynton stopped Fort Cherry from scoring in double-digits in three of the four quarters to defeat the Rangers, 50-28, in the McGuffey tournament.

Outside of a 10-point third quarter, Fort Cherry (4-5) was limited to 16 points. It is the Rangers third consecutive loss.

Fort Cherry’s McKenzie Faure led all scorers with 11 points.

It is the fourth straight win for Carlynton, which improves to 7-1 overall.

California 56, Bentworth 14: Three players scored in double figures as California defeated tournament host Bentoworth, 56-14.

Camari Walden led the Trojans, who improve to 4-4 overall, with 12 points. Jordyn Cru scored 11 points and Sydney Smichnick finished with 10.

Caroline Rice had eight points for Bentworth (1-7).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Fort Cherry 69, Propel Montour 62: Zach Vincenti scored a season-high 20 points as Fort Cherry defeated Propel Montour, 69-62, in a consolation game at the Avella tournament.

It was the first win for the Rangers this season.

Tied at halftime, 32-32, Fort Cherry (1-6) scored 20 points in the third quarter to take the lead for the remainder of the game. Maddox Truschel and Noah Babirad scored 17 and 14 points, respectively.

Propel Montour was paced by Khalil Kerr’s 24 points. Cory Simmons also had 22.

Chartiers-Houston 52, McGuffey 48: Evan Simpson scored 10 of Chartiers-Houston’s 20 points in the third quarter as the Bucs held on to defeat McGuffey, 52-40, in the Avella tournament.

Simpson tied with McGuffey’s C.J. Cole with a game-high 21 points.

Chartiers-Houston (5-4) limited the Highlanders to four points in the first quarter then extended its lead with the 20-point third quarter. Evan Simpson scored 10 points for the Bucs.

Nate Witkowky also finished with 10 for McGuffey (6-3), which saw its four-game winning streak come to an end.

Waynesburg 76, Jefferson-Morgan 39: Lucas Garber scored a game-high 22 points as Waynesburg dominated the first half and fourth quarter to defeat Jefferson-Morgan, 76-39, in the Bentworth tournament championship game.

Chris King and Richard Bortz scored 14 and 10 points, respectively, as the Raiders jumped out to a 32-11 halftime lead. Garber, King and Bortz made the all-tournament team.

Waynesburg (6-2) won its third consecutive game.

Tahj Jacobs and Devin Stoneking paced Jefferson-Morgan (2-8) with 14 points each.

Burgettstown 64, Avella 28: Dante Gianfrancesco set a school record with nine three-pointers as Burgettstown downed tournament host Avella, 64-28.

Gianfrancesco scored a game-high 27 points for the Blue Devils, who improve to 5-3 and advance to the tournament championship at 7:30 p.m. tonight against Chartiers-Houston.

Outscoring the Eagles 18-1 in the first quarter, Burgettstown led 38-11 at halftime. Gianfrancesco didn’t play the fourth quarter, which was played with a running clock. Scott Ferris finished in double figures with 14 points.

Tanner Terensky and Brandon Samol each scored five points for Avella (2-6).

South Allegheny 60, Bentworth 25: South Allegheny opened the game on a 16-2 run and cruised the remainder of the game to defeat tournament host Bentworth, 60-25.

Omar Faulkner led South Allegheny (3-6) with 27 points. Jett Jones made three three-pointers and finished with 16 points.

The lone scorer in double figures for Bentworth (0-8) was Shawn Dziak with 12 points.
