Carmichaels had a big second half Thursday night in a win at Avella and the Mikes carried that momentum over to Friday as they rolled to a 71-55 victory over visiting Bentworth in Section 2-AA.

The win was the 500th in the career of veteran Carmichaels coach Don Williams, who is in his 43rd season with the Mikes.

Williams won his first game back in 1975. His 400th victory came in the 2008-09 season.

The win by Carmichaels (2-8, 10-9) caused a logjam in the middle of the section standings. The loss dropped Bentworth to 6-5 in the section and 11-7 overall. The Bearcats, California and Frazier are vying for the final two postseason sports from the section.

The Mikes took control of the game early, building a 16-4 lead after one quarter. Bentworth rallied and closed to within 30-26 at halftime, but Carmichaels scored more than 40 points in the second half of a game for the second consecutive night to secure the victory.

Matt Barrish led the Mikes in scoring with a game-high 22 points. Dylan Wilson followed with 18 points and Al Cree had 15.

Levi Jordan paced Bentworth with 21 points and Steven Harner had 15.

South Fayette 64, Waynesburg 54:

South Fayette kepts its Section 3-AAAA title hopes alive by defeating visiting Waynesburg, 64-54.

The Lions (9-3, 12-6) withstood a 32-point performance by Waynesburg’s Darton McIntire that made the senior guard the school’s all-time scoring leader.

McIntire finished the night with 1,486 career points, 20 better than previous record holder P.J. Schumacher, who set the mark in 2003.

South Fayette remains one game behind section leader Belle Vernon. Each team has two section games remaining. The Lions took control early against Waynesburg (1-11, 4-15) by scoring 29 first-quarter points and building a 19-point lead. 

Tim Locher led the Lions in scoring with 15 points. Ryan Franklin followed with 12 points and Braden Hoy had 10. Franklin and Hoy each scored eight points during South Fayette’s big first quarter.

McIntire was joined in double figures by teammate Lucas Garber, who had 10 points. McIntire made five three-pointers in the game and scored 20 second-half points.

Trinity 44, Thomas Jefferson 34:

Joey Koroly scored 12 points and Trinity pulled away in the second half, surviving Thomas Jefferson’s slowdown to beat the Jaguars 44-34 in a key Class 5A Section 1 game.

The win keeps the section title hopes alive for Trinity (8-2, 15-4). The Hillers are a game behind first-place McKeesport in the section.

Trinity was held to only 12 first-half points but still managed a one-point lead at intermission as TJ tried to slow the game’s tempo. The Hillers then began to pull away midway through the third quarter and took a 24-18 lead into the final eight minutes.

Michael Koroly made a couple of key baskets in the fourth quarter that widened Trinity’s lead and the Hillers made enough free throws down the stretch to prevent the Jaguars from making a final push.

Jeff Ecker had a strong game for Trinity by scoring 11 points.

John Pugh was the leading scorer for TJ (2-9, 3-17) with nine points.

West Greene 65, Mapletown 37:

Nathan Brudnock poured in a game-high 28 points, leading visiting West Greene to a 65-37 win at Mapletown in Section 2-A and clinching a playoff berth for the Pioneers.

This is the third consecutive year West Greene has advanced to the WPIAL playoffs after not making the postseason in each of the previous 24 seasons.

Gavin Scott also had a biog game for West Greene (5-3, 7-12) with 18 points that included four three-pointers.

Ethan Carter was the leading scorer for Mapletown (0-9, 0-20).

Jefferson-Morgan 68, Fort Cherry 63:

Jalen Torres scored a game-high 27 points as visiting Jefferson-Morgan pulled a 68-63 upset over second-place Fort Cherry, 68-63, in Section 2-AA.

In a foul-filled game that went back and forth, free-throw shooting made the difference as J-M (2-8, 9-11) went 13 of 16 from the foul line. Fort Cherry only went 12 of 25.

Building a lead behind Torres’ four three-pointers, the Rockets also received secondary scoring from Devin Stoneking, who finished with 13 points, and D.L. Garrett’s 11 points.

Steve Lacek led Fort Cherry (7-4, 9-10) with 16 points.

Zach Vincenti, Nate Higham and Aidan Higham all scored in double figures for the Rangers, who have lost four of their last five games.

McKeesport 74, Ringgold 39:

Class 5A Section 1 leader McKeesport rolled to its eighth consecutive victory, 74-39, over host Ringgold to clinch at least a share of the section title.

The Tigers improved to 10-1 in the league and 12-6 overall.

The Tigers took control of the game with a big first half, scoring 26 second-quarter points en route to a 42-16 lead at halftime.

Terron Taylor led three McKeesport players in double figures with 14 points.

Demetrius Butler paced Ringgold (0-10, 2-17) with 12 points and Jaden Taylor had 11.

Upper St. Clair 71, Peters Township 58:

Brett Moore scored 14 of his game-high 16 points in the second half as Upper St. Clair defeated visiting Peters Township 71-58 in a Class 6A Section 2 game. The win clinched a playoff berth for the Panthers.

Moore helped USC (6-5, 11-9) pull away in the second half after leading by only 32-28 at halftime.

Tanner Gensler, Kyle Meinert and Chris Pantehs each contributed 10 points for the Panthers.

Grant Mocharko scored 15 points to lead Peters Township (1-9, 5-13). Colin Cote followed with 14 points.

Charleroi 64, Brownsville 59, OT:

Joe Caruso scored eight points in overtime to lift Charleroi over Brownsville 64-59 in a Section 4-AAA game.

The Cougars outscored Brownsville in overtime 14-9 for the victory, rallying from a 21-18 deficit at halftime.

Caruso finished with 20 points for Charleroi (2-8, 6-13), while teammate Caleb Carson couldn’t miss from behind the three-point arc. Carson made seven three-pointers to score a team-high 28 points.

Carson was outdone by Shandon Marshall, the only form of consistent offense found by Brownsville (3-7, 7-11). Marshall finished with 36 points.

Chartiers-Houston 62, Frazier 45:

Chartiers-Houston exemplified the motto of free throws winning games.

The Bucs all 10 of their free throws in the fourth quarter to extend their lead and defeat Frazier 62-45 in a Section 2-AA contest.

Chartiers-Houston’s Cam Hanley, who made all eight of his free throws in the fourth quarter, led all scorers with 23 points.

Andrew Clark and Zach Southern also chipped in with 19 and 14 points, respectively, for Chartiers-Houston (9-1, 14-5).

Justin Novak scored a team-high 12 points for Frazier (5-5, 7-10).

Belle Vernon 63, McGuffey 60:

Everybody got into the act for Belle Vernon as four players scored in double figures as the Leopards defeated McGuffey 63-60 in a tightly contested Section 3-4A matchup.

Joe Sabolek, Bryce Washington, Logan Pfrogner and Derek Thomas all scored double digits.

Sabolek led the Leopards with 14 points as they kept their halftime lead with 15 points in both the third and fourth quarters.

The two teams going in opposite ways – Belle Vernon (10-2, 15-4) with six straight wins and the Highlanders losing six of their last seven – each scored 15 points in the final eight minutes.

C.J. Cole led McGuffey (4-8, 11-9) with 17 points.

The Leopards remain in first place in the section.

Monessen 84, Geibel 23:

Monessen made nine three-pointers to continue its Section 2-A dominance as the Greyhounds defeated Geibel, 84-23.

Winning six of its eight conference games by at least 40 points, Monessen (8-0, 11-7) benefitted on four threes from Cory Fleming, who scored a game-high 23 points. Lyndon Henderson also made a trio three-pointers to finish with 18 points.

Isaiah Allums also had 10 for the Greyhounds as they jumped out to a 62-15 halftime lead.

Enzo Fetsko scored 10 points for Geibel (3-6, 5-15).
