There are some nights where the opponent can’t miss.
Unfortunately for the Peters Township High School girls basketball team, Thursday was one of those nights for North Allegheny.
The Tigers made 12 three-pointers – eight in the first half – to give them enough of a cushion to down Peters Township 67-54 in a non-section matchup of the top two teams in Class 6A.
The eight triples in the opening half put the Indians down 37-24 at halftime.
Peters Township (18-3) wouldn’t go away.
Makenna Marisa led a third-quarter comeback attempt while reaching the 1,000-point milestone halfway through the quarter as PT narrowed its deficit to seven points, 50-43. Marisa entered the game needing 16 points to reach the milestone. She scored a game-high 20 points.
The Indians narrowed the North Allegheny (21-0) lead to one point, 54-53, with 2:32 remaining before fouls and easy baskets led to a 13-1 run to end the game for the Tigers.
Lillian Young and Olivia Ziegler also reached double digits with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
North Allegheny was led by Madelyn Fischer’s 18 points. Rachel Martindale also chipped in 15 points for the Tigers.
Beth-Center 65, Bentworth 27:
A win from Beth-Center and loss from Frazier would have put the Bulldogs in the WPIAL playoffs.
Beth-Center took care of business defeated Bentworth 65-27 in a Section 3-AA game but didn’t receive any help from California as the Bulldogs were eliminated from playoff contention.
Olivia Greco led Beth-Center (8-6, 13-8) with 20 points, while Kinlee Whited scored 17 points.
Frazier defeated California 66-52 to lock up the fourth and final playoff spot in the section.
Jenna Vito scored 10 points for Bentworth (0-14, 3-19), which trailed 25-8 at halftime.
Canon-McMillan 72, West Mifflin 36:
Tamara Mathis scored 15 of her game-high 20 points in the first half as Canon-McMillan raced out to an early lead and defeated West Mifflin 72-36 in a non-section contest.
The Big Macs scored 19 points in the first quarter and 14 in the second to lead 33-20 at halftime.
Izzy Allen had 15 points for Canon-McMillan (10-10), while Nya Williams had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Baili Washnock scored in double figures for the second straight game, finishing with 12 points.
West Mifflin (7-14) was paced by Shelby Genes’ 10 points.
Avella 48, Clairton 41:
Free throws weren’t a strong point for Avella but the Eagles built a lead in the second and third quarters that it didn’t matter as they defeated Clairton 48-41 in a non-section game.
Bailey Lis scored a game-high 21 points for Avella (12-8), which scored 13 points in the second quarter and 19 points in the third to build a 39-24 lead over the Bears.
Clairton (7-14) pulled within 10 points in the final quarter after the Eagles couldn’t put the game away at the foul line, only shooting 9 of 27.
Cheyenne Gallaway and Iona Chapman each scored 16 points for the Bears.
BOYS RESULTS
Carlynton 71, Burgettstown 68:
Despite trailing the entire game, Carlynton found its shot from behind the three-point arc in the fourth quarter and defeated Burgettstown 71-68 in a non-section game.
Carlynton (7-14) made five three-pointers in the final eight minutes to take the lead and avenge a late-December loss at the Avella Christmas Tournament.
Tayzel Hutchinson led the Cougars with 21 points, while Chauncie Mickins and Ian Gallagher each finished with 12 points to win their third consecutive game.
Ryan Lounder scored a game-high 25 points for the Burgettstown (14-6), which will look for a bounce back in its final regular-season game after dropping three straight.
