Ringgold’s Vogt

wins diving title

Ringgold High School junior Anna Vogt won the WPIAL girls diving championship Friday at South Park High School with a point total of 354.70.

Vogt, the WPIAL runner-up in 2017, trailed after the semi-final but rallied to overtake Blackhawk’s Jamie Elia, who led her 271.80 to 269.80 after the semifinals.

One of Elia’s three dives in the final round was ruled a “failed dive.” That made her slip to third place. Elizabeth Forward senior Jordan Vasko was second with 352.70 points.

Vogt advances to the PIAA Championships set for March 14-17 at Kinney Natatorium at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.

She owns the Ringgold girl’s diving record with a total 249.2 points, set this season in a home meet against Steel Valley.

In competition, each dive is judged with a point total which is then multiplied by the degree of difficulty of each specific dive. Each dive is added together to reach the overall point total.

Vogt said she “warmed up pretty well” but was not happy with her performance in the early dives.

Her preparation for the state meet will be simple.

“Just get in as many repetitions as I can and make my dives as clean as possible,” she said.

In the NHL

Brandon Manning had a goal and two assists and the Philadelphia Flyers topped the Ottawa Senators 5-3 on Saturday for their fifth consecutive victory.

Ivan Provorov, Robert Hagg, Claude Giroux and Nolan Patrick also scored for the Flyers. Petr Mrazek made 25 saves in his second start for the Flyers since being acquired in a trade with Detroit.

  • Rookie Jon Gillies made 28 saves for his second straight victory, Mikael Backlund had a goal and two assists and the Calgary Flames beat the Colorado Avalanche 5-1.
  • The Edmonton Oilers traded defenseman Brandon Davidson to the New York Islanders for a 2019 third-round draft pick. Davidson, 26, has three goals and two assists in 36 games with Edmonton and the Montreal Canadiens this season.

In the NBA

Joel Embiid had 28 points and 14 rebounds, and the Philadelphia 76ers extended their season-high win streak to seven with a 116-105 victory over the Orlando Magic Saturday.

Creighton upsets No. 3 Villanova

Marcus Foster scored 28 points, Davion Mintz gave Creighton the lead for good early in overtime, and the Bluejays defeated the highest-ranked opponent in program history with an 89-83 upset of No. 3 Villanova Saturday.

Creighton (20-9, 9-7 Big East), playing without injured starting forward Ronnie Harrell Jr., ended a three-game conference losing streak and won for the first time in nine games against Villanova since 2014. The Bluejays also avenged a 20-point road loss to Villanova on Feb. 1.

Villanova (25-4, 12-4) squandered an eight-point lead with 4½ minutes left and missed seven of its last nine shots.
