W&J’s DeRubbo, Gilbert get awards
Washington & Jefferson College’s Jina DeRubbo was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, and W&J guard Lauren Gilbert was chosen the conference’s Freshman of the Year.
W&J senior guard Amirah Moore and Waynesburg senior forward Addy Knetzer were named All-PAC first team.
DeRubbo has led W&J to a 22-5 record to earn her seventh PAC Coach of the Year award. The 22 wins in the regular season mark the 11th 20-win season in 14 years for DeRubbo, who earned her 400th career victory earlier this season.
Gilbert is the second W&J player to be named Freshman of the Year. She is averaging 12.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.
Moore averages 14.1 points per game and leads the Presidents in scoring. She is shooting a career-best 80 percent from the free-throw line. Last month, she became the 17th player in W&J history to score 1,000 career points.
Knetzer, a Houston native, led the Yellow Jackets in both scoring (16.4 per game) and rebounding (8.8). She reached two milestones in her final season by scoring her 1,500th point and grabbing her 1,000th rebound. She is Waynesburg’s second-leading scorer (1,615) and top rebounder (1,032).
W&J’s Danielle Parker, a junior forward from Canonsburg, was named to the second team.
Thomas More’s Maidson Temple was named the Player of the Year and Grove City’s Lexi Arkwright was recognized as the Defensive player of the Year.
In the NBA
LaMarcus Aldridge scored 27 points, Danny Green added 22 and the San Antonio Spurs ended their annual “rodeo” road trip by beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 110-94 to snap a four-game losing streak.
Green, who missed Friday’s loss at Denver with food poisoning, came off the bench for the first time in 49 games this season. He made five 3-pointers to provide a perfect outside complement to Aldridge’s dynamic inside game. Dejounte Murray added 13 points and nine rebounds for San Antonio, a team not accustomed to any turmoil.
LeBron James had 33 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists for the Cavs, who fell to 3-2 since overhauling their roster with three trades.
- Jrue Holiday scored 28 of his season-high 36 points after halftime to lead the New Orleans Pelicans to a 123-121 overtime victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.
Holiday added nine rebounds and six assists for New Orleans, which held on for its season-high fifth win in a row when Jason Terry’s 3-pointer was ruled after the buzzer.
- Dwight Howard had 17 points and 12 rebounds, Kemba Walker added 17 points and the Charlotte Hornets beat the Detroit Pistons 114-98 for their season-best fourth straight win.
In the NHL
Pekka Rinne made 27 saves for his sixth shutout of the season and the Nashville Predators earned a 4-0 win over the St. Louis Blues Sunday.
Rinne earned his 300th career win on Thursday against San Jose for the Predators, who regained sole possession of first place in the Central Division.
Austin Watson, Colton Sissons, Kevin Fiala and Scott Hartnell scored for the Predators.
In golf
Florida’s Jessica Korda set a tournament record to win the LPGA Thailand at the Siam Country Club Pattaya Old Course Sunday.
Korda held off Lexi Thompson and local hope Moriya Jutanugarn for a four-stroke win after a final-round 67 for an overall total of 25 under 263, smashing the previous mark of 22 under set by Amy Yang of South Korea in 2017.
