Burt reaches

100 wins

Duquesne women’s basketball coach and Washington native Dan Burt earned his 100th victory in the Dukes 60-57 comeback win over UMass Sunday.

Burt, a Trinity High School graduate, was the fastest in Duquesne history to achieve the feat, only needing 150 games.

Named head coach in April 2013, Burt has had tremendous success. In three of his first four seasons, the Dukes have eclipsed 20 wins and more than 10 wins in Atlantic 10 play.

Duquesne made the Women’s National Invitation Tournament in 2014, 2015 and 2016. The Dukes reached the NCAA Tournament in 2016, advancing to the second round.

Prior to arriving at Duquesne, Burt was an assistant at UNC Wilmington, West Virginia and Bucknell. He was an assistant for the Dukes from 2007-2013 prior to being promoted to head coach.

D-III coach helps avoid accident

A quick-thinking coach averted what could have been a terrible bus accident for the University of Dubuque women’s basketball team.

The Division III team from Iowa was driving back from a tournament in Nashville, Tenn., Sunday morning. About 90 minutes into the trip, assistant coach Justin Smith was jolted from his seat when the bus hit a guard rail on Interstate 24 in Kentucky.

The driver had passed out, with the bus going 70 mph. Smith leapt into action, hitting the brakes and stopping the bus. Apart from the driver, everyone on the bus was OK.

After stopping the bus, Smith and the other coaches got the bus out of harm’s way. It was still on the highway and could have been hit from behind.

Emergency personnel arrived. The driver was conscious and taken to Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Ken.

Smith said the team was supposed to leave later Sunday morning, but the driver had told him and Noll that he wasn’t feeling well the last few days. So the team moved the departure time up an hour to 7:45 a.m.

In the NHL

Minnesota Wild left winger Zach Parise has been cleared to make his season debut, after missing the first 39 games because of back trouble.

Parise told reporters after practice Monday afternoon that he’s “got the green light” to play for the Wild on Tuesday night against Florida. Parise skated on a line with Charlie Coyle and Chris Stewart.

He played in one game on a conditioning assignment last week for the Wild’s AHL affiliate in Iowa.

Parise had surgery on Oct. 24 to address a disk problem in his lower back that caused leg pain and weakness. He resumed skating on Nov. 29 and rejoined the team for practice on Dec. 14. Right wing Zack Mitchell was waived on Monday to make room on the roster for Parise.
