Wild Things

sign pitcher

The Washington Wild Things have signed right-handed pitcher Ryan Castellanos to a contract.

Castellanos, whose brother Nick plays in the major leagues with the Detroit Tigers, played at University of Illinois for two years before transferring to Nova Southeastern in Florida for his third and final collegiate season.

He was drafted in the 25th round of the 2015 draft and played in the Tigers’ organizations for three seasons.

“Coming from a college with a championship mentality, we value Ryan’s experience throwing in big games. During his tenure with the Tigers we saw an ability to work deep into games and put his team in position to win,” said Wild Things general manager Steven Zavacky.

In the Tigers’ system, Castellanos, 23, advanced to the high-Class A level with Lakeland of the Florida State League. He played for Connecticut in the New York-Penn League in 2017. He has a 16-13 minor-league record.

Waynesburg routs Connellsville

Waynesburg rolled past Connellsville, 62-17, on the strength of six pins in a non-section wrestling match Monday.

Hunter Shriver (106), Wyatt Henson (120), Caleb Morris (132), Jackson Henson (145), Trey Howard (152), Luke Robinson (195) and Spencer Lesinsky (220) each won by fall for the Raiders (9-1).

Anselmino Memorial game scheduled

The Canon-McMillan and Ringgold high school boys basketball teams will meet Jan. 26 in the inaugural Brian Anselmino Memorial Basketball Game. The game will be held at Canon-McMillian. Tipoff is 7:30 pm.

Anselmino was a standout basketball player at Ringgold in the mid-1980s and later became a Canonsburg resident where he coached youth baseball and was a community volunteer. Anselmino died in an automobile accident in 2014.

This year’s game will be the first in what is expected to be an annual matchup between the two school districts. Next year’s game will be held at Ringgold.

The schools are using this game to raise funds for the Brian Anselmino Memorial Fund, which provides two $5,000 scholarships annually to a Ringgold student and a Canon-McMillan student. Fans in attendance can purchase t-shirts, golf towels, hats, 50/50 raffle tickets and more.

to play at Cal

Tickets are available online now for the Harlem Globetrotters’ “2018 Amazing Feats of Basketball World Tour,” coming Feb. 7 to the Convocation Center at California University.

The world’s largest collection of elite dunkers, the 2018 Globetrotters cast includes six players who have competed in the annual College Slam Dunk contest held during Final Four weekend, a Guinness World Record holder for slam dunks, and the 2016 winner of the popular TV show “The Dunk King.”

The 2018 show also marks the debut of the Flying Globies, an acrobatic trampoline dunk team that uses exciting in-air stunts.

The family-friendly show features premier showmen such as Big Easy Lofton, Hi-Lite Bruton, Ant Atkinson and Hammer Harrison, plus fan favorites Firefly Fisher, Bull Bullard, Thunder Law and Cheese Chisholm. They join the largest female roster in team history, including women’s basketball stars TNT Lister, Ace Jackson, Hoops Green and Torch George.

Ticket prices range from $15 to $135 and can be ordered online at www.harlemglobetrotters.com. The Convocation Center’s doors will open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m.

Fans who purchase a “Magic Pass” for an additional $15 can spend time on the court from 5:30 to 6 p.m. During this pre-show, Magic Pass holders can interact with the Globetrotters, shoot baskets, try out ball tricks, or collect autographs and photos.

After each game, the Globetrotters remain on the court for at least 15 minutes to sign autographs and have photographs taken with fans.

The Globetrotters last performed at Cal in 2013.
