Boys basketball
Trent Belleville made a game-winning layup as time expired to give McGuffey a 64-62 victory over Section 3-AAAA opponent Waynesburg Saturday night at Waynesburg High School.
Belleville finished with a game-high 26 points and 15 rebounds for the Highlanders, who bounced back after losing back-to-back games.
Trailing by six points, 49-43, entering the fourth quarter, Waynesburg (0-5, 2-9) rallied to tie the game late behind the scoring of Darton McIntire, who finished with 22 points.
McGuffey (3-2, 10-3) found secondary scoring from David Chapman, who had 12 points, and C.J. Cole, who finished with 11.
- Joey Koroly made three of Trinity’s eight three-pointers as the Hillers defeated West Mifflin 57-41 in a Class 5A Section 1 game.
The trio of three-pointers made by Koroly sparked his team-high 18 points as Trinity (4-1, 9-3) extended its lead by outscoring the Titans in the final three quarters.
Dylan Kern and Dausen Mary also reached double figures for the Hillers with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
After winning two of its first three games, West Mifflin (1-3, 2-7) has lost six straight.
Josh Brown led the Titans with 20 points.
- Antonio Garofoli made six three-pointers and scored a game-high 20 points as Mt. Lebanon defeated Peters Township 72-38 in a Section 2-6A game.
Garofoli helped the Blue Devils race out to a 47-15 halftime lead.
Hayden Mitchell also had 14 points for Mt. Lebanon (5-0, 12-1).
Peters Township (0-5, 4-8) was paced by Colin Cote’s eight points. The Indians have lost seven of their last eight games.
Girls basketball
Shay Echegaray scored the go-ahead basket with 1:03 remaining and Waynesburg rallied in the second half to beat McGuffey 27-24 in a Section 2-AAA game Saturday.
It was the first win in five section games for Waynesburg (2-9 overall), which trailed 16-8 at halftime. The Raiders outscored McGuffey 12-4 in the third quarter to tie the score entering the final eight minutes.
Echegaray’s basket gave Waynesburg the lead for good and Rachel Elsenheimer, who scored eight points, made it a three-point game with a free throw. Elle Hampson also scored eight points for the Raiders.
McGuffey (1-4, 3-10) was held to eight second-half points. Abby Donnelly scored eight points.
