Trinty routs Ambridge

Trinity used nine pins and lost just one bout in running past Ambridge, 72-3, in the fifth-place match of the Section 4-AAA Team Tournament Tuesday night.

Leading the pin parade were Justin Walters (106), A.D. Nelson (120), Dan Boardley (126), Dante Cecchine (152), Cole Whitmer (160), Chet Locy (170), Xane stock (182), Jared rice (195) and Regis Seng (220).

Trinity advances to next week’s WPIAL Team Tournament. Pairings will be released Thursday.

Meadows cancels harness racing card

Electrical issues forced The Meadows Racetrack & Casino to cancel Tuesday’s harness racing card. Live racing is expected to resume today with first post at 1:05 p.m.

Blue Jays reach deal with Granderson

Outfielder Curtis Granderson and the Toronto Blue Jays have finalized a $5 million, one-year contract.

The three-time All-Star wore a Blue Jays T-shirt in a video posted to his Twitter timeline Tuesday and wrote he was “thrilled” to announce he’ll be playing north of the border this season.

He can earn an additional $1.5 million in performance bonuses based on plate appearances: $125,000 for 450, $250,000 apiece for 500 and 550, $375,000 for 600 and $500,000 for 650.

The 36-year-old is Toronto’s second outfield acquisition in five days. Randal Grichuk was acquired in a trade from St. Louis Friday.

In college basketball

Trae Young had 26 points and nine assists, and No. 12 Oklahoma rallied to beat No. 5 Kansas 85-80 Tuesday.

Young, the nation’s leader in scoring and assists, struggled with efficiency in losses to Kansas State and Oklahoma State last week. Against Kansas, the freshman point guard made 7 of 9 field goals and 10 of 12 free throws.

Christian James scored 15 points and Brady Manek added 14 for the Sooners (15-4, 5-3 Big 12), who won their 13th straight at home.

• Devon Hall scored 14 points, Kyle Guy had 12 and No. 2 Virginia broke open a close game with an 18-2 run in the second half to win their 11th straight, 61-36 over No. 18 Clemson.

The Cavaliers (19-1, 8-0 ACC), who lead the nation in scoring defense, allowed their fewest points of the season. The Tigers gave Virginia a game until early in the second half, when Clemson managed just four points in a span of 12 minutes. The burst turned a 30-27 lead into a 48-29 advantage.

Vets group denied Super Bowl ad

The NFL has denied advertising space in the Super Bowl program for a veterans group that declined to alter language about standing for the national anthem.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed that American Veterans, or AMVETS , submitted an advertisement last week to the third-party publisher of the game program with the message, “Please Stand.”

McCarthy said the league, which has editorial control over the content, asked AMVETS to consider other options for the message, such as “Please Honor our Veterans” or “Please Stand for our Veterans.” The two organizations were unable to agree on language in time to meet production deadlines. McCarthy said a separate ad from the Veterans of Foreign Wars group with the words “We Stand for Veterans” was approved.

Some NFL players have taken to kneeling during the national anthem over the last two seasons to raise awareness of social and racial injustice, issues that created division within the league. The NFL announced Tuesday that an owner-player committee was being created to try to address them.
