How do I keep my heart healthy?

Your heart is one of the most important organs in your cardiovascular system. It is important that you take care of it. Exercising for 30 minutes a day can be a huge help. All forms of exercise will get your heart rate up and keep the blood moving. The most affective for your cardiovascular system is cardio training – this can be anything from a steady walk on the treadmill to a high intensity interval workout. A healthy heart will decrease your risk of heart disease. Lifting heavy, and decreasing rest periods, can also serve as a form of cardio. So, get exercising and get working on your heart.

It’s the middle of winter, it’s cold, and I’m inside all day – should I be taking vitamin D, since I hardly see the sun?

More and more studies are indicating that a vitamin D deficiency could be a risk factor for heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and strokes, as well as high blood pressure and diabetes. During winter, in much of the US, you’re not likely to get your recommended dose of 600 IU (International Units) per day of vitamin D. You can add in some foods that have vitamin D, but there aren’t many that are naturally occurring – fatty fish, like salmon or tuna, beef liver, cheese and mushrooms are the main sources. Most likely though, you would be looking for fortified foods, such as milk, yogurt, orange juice, or some cereals. Since many foods are not rich sources of the vitamin, it may also be recommended that you supplement with a daily vitamin. As always, if you’re concerned about your levels of vitamin D, consult your doctor, who can provide the proper testing and guidance.
