Mceachern added

to FL all-star game

Wild Things second baseman Carter McEachern was one of seven players added Wednesday to the Frontier All-Star Game that will be played Wednesday at CarShield Field in O’Fallon, Mo.

McEachern was added to the Rookie squad.

The league has switched from its East Division vs. West Division format for the all-star game and will use a Rookie vs. Experienced format. Rookies and Experienced are the Frontier League’s two roster classifications for players.

Washington will have five players on the Experienced team – catcher Kyle Pollock, outfielder Roman Collins and James Harris, and pitchers Thomas Dorminy and Zach Strecker.

McEachern, a native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, is Washington’s lone player on the Rookie team. It is the third time in Wild Things history that the team has had six players in the all-star game.

McEachern is in his first season with Washington after being acquired in the offseason in a trade with the Three Rivers Eagles of the Can-Am League. McEachern entered Wednesday with a .268 batting average and leads all active Frontier League second basemen with 23 RBI.

Chestnut sets record with 74 hot dogs

Joey “Jaws” Chestnut extended his reign as champion eater at the Nathan’s Famous July Fourth hot dog eating contest Wednesday, downing a record 74 wieners and buns in 10 minutes to take home the coveted Mustard Belt for the 11th time.

Miki Sudo held on to her title as the top women’s competitor at the annual Brooklyn eat-off, chomping 37 franks and buns to take home the top prize for an unprecedented fifth consecutive year.

Chestnut said he was “feeling good.”

“I found a vicious rhythm,” the 34-year-old Chestnut said after the stuffing session.

But while Chestnut ate 10 more dogs and buns than second-place finisher Carmen Cincotti, a judging error cast initial doubt over their totals after jurists didn’t see the eaters were taking the dogs and buns from two plates.

“Frankly, the judging was just off,” said George Shea, the longtime Coney Island announcer. “Joey said, ‘Look at my plates,’ and Carmen said, ‘Look at my plates.’ We counted the plates that they had eaten and it was 64 and 74.”

Eric Gonzalez, the Brooklyn district attorney, certified the final tally and Chestnut’s record of 74, two more than he consumed last year.

“At the end of the day, Joey Chestnut came in here and ate 74 hot dogs, broke a world record,” said Cincotti, who celebrated his 26th birthday on Wednesday. “Apparently they were good dogs.”

A total of $40,000 in prize money was up for grabs, with the first-place winners taking home $10,000 each.

Sixers to keep

Amir Johnson

Amir Johnson is going back to the Philadelphia 76ers for at least one more season.

A person with knowledge of the negotiations said Wednesday that Johnson has agreed to a one-year contract with Philadelphia that could become official as soon as Friday, when the NBA’s offseason moratorium on player movement ends.

The person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of that moratorium.

The 6-9 Johnson was primarily a reserve for the 76ers last season, when he averaged 4.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Philadelphia is the fourth club for the 31-year-old, who will be entering his 14th NBA season this fall.
