Penguins sign Grant

The Pittsburgh Penguins signed forward Derek Grant to a one-year contract worth $650,000 Thursday.

Grant, 28, had 12 goals and 12 assists in 66 games for the Anaheim Ducks last season. He also spent the parts of his six NHL seasons with Ottawa, Calgary, Buffalo and Nashville.

Falcons not budging

A person familiar with the situation says the Atlanta Falcons won’t renegotiate Julio Jones’ contract this season, casting doubts on whether the star receiver will be in training camp next week.

The Falcons informed Jones several weeks ago that they didn’t have room under the salary cap to offer him a new deal for this season, according to the person, who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity Thursday because the contract talks have not been made public.

Jones dipped on the NFL’s list of highest-paid receivers during the offseason when several players received huge new contracts, including Tampa Bay’s Mike Evans and Cleveland’s Jarvis Landry.

Jones is set to make $10.5 million this season, $12.5 million in 2019 and $11.4 million in the final season of a six-year, $71.3 million contract he signed in 2015. The current deal includes $47 million in guaranteed money.

Celtics re-sign Smart

The Boston Celtics have re-signed guard Marcus Smart.

The 6-foot-4 defensive stalwart is returning to the team that picked him sixth overall in the 2014 draft after finding the market for a restricted free agent wasn’t as lucrative as he’d hoped.

A person with knowledge of the agreement tells the Associated Press that Smart signed a four-year, $52 million contract with the Celtics. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Thursday because the team did not disclose the terms of the contract.

Smart averaged 10.2 points, 4.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game this season. He returned from thumb surgery late in the first round of the playoffs and provided the defensive presence that was instrumental in the Celtics taking the Cleveland Cavaliers to seven games in the Eastern Conference finals.

Film to document baseball legend

A new film explores the life of baseball legend Ted Williams and his struggles with his Mexican-American heritage and his volatile relationships with family and the press.

The upcoming PBS “American Masters” documentary on the former Boston Red Sox slugger uses rare footage and family interviews to paint a picture of a complicated figure who hid his past but later spoke out and defended black players.

The last major league baseball player to hit over .400, millions of fans idolized Williams for his superb slugging skills and John Wayne-like persona as a foul-mouth outdoorsman.

Thunder to

trade Anthony

Carmelo Anthony is done in Oklahoma City.

A person with knowledge of the details tells The Associated Press the Thunder are sending the veteran NBA forward and a 2022 protected first-round pick to Atlanta in exchange for Hawks guard Dennis Schroder and Mike Muscala. Anthony will be waived, clearing the way for him to sign as a free agent elsewhere.

ESPN, which first reported the trade, said the Thunder will send Muscala to the Philadelphia 76ers for Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot and Philadelphia’s Justin Anderson will be sent to Atlanta.
