Wheatcroft shoots
4 under in Canada
Washington native Steve Wheatcroft birdied five holes and shot a 4-under 68 in the opening round of the RBC Canadian Open Thursday in Ontario, Canada.
Wheatcroft joins a large group at 4 under, including several golfers that failed to finish their round after play was suspended because of high wind and potential lightning strikes.
Robert Garrigus holds a one-stroke lead at 9-under 63.
Youth baseball
The C-Side Little League team will play in the elimination bracket final of the Pennsylvania State tournament Saturday.
C-Side will play the Ridley-Lehigh winner at 1 p.m. to play in the championship.
The state champion will advance to the Mid-Atlantic Region tournament
Penguins sign Jarry
The Pittsburgh Penguins signed goaltender Tristan Jarry to a two-year contract.
Jarry’s contract is a two-way deal in 2018-19, and a one-way deal in 2019-20. The average annual value at the NHL level is $675,000.
The 23-year-old Jarry split time between Pittsburgh and its top minor-league affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, in 2017-18. Jarry saw his first extensive NHL action, playing in 26 games with the Penguins.
The 6-foot-2, 194-pound Jarry started in 23 of his 26 NHL regular-season games and went 14-6-2 with the Penguins. Jarry led all NHL rookies with 14 wins.
Seahawks release McDowell
The Seattle Seahawks released defensive lineman Malik McDowell at the start of training camp Thursday.
The 2017 second-round pick never played a down for the team following an ATV accident.
Cornerback DeAndre Elliott were also released ahead of Seattle’s first practice.
McDowell was released with a non-football injury designation, while Elliott failed his physical.
Seattle had high hopes for McDowell when he was taken as the Seahawks’ first draft pick in 2017. He never saw the field, though, after suffering a severe concussion in an ATV accident prior to the start of training camp a year ago. The team remained vague about his specific injuries throughout last season, but it became clear he might never suit up.
Carter to play
21st season
A person familiar with the deal says veteran Vince Carter has agreed to a one-year, $2.4 million contract with the Atlanta Hawks.
The person spoke to the Associated Press Thursday on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been announced.
The 41-year-old Carter was given the veteran’s minimum deal to provide veteran leadership on a rebuilding Atlanta squad entering its first season with coach Lloyd Pierce.
Carter averaged 5.4 points and only 17.7 minutes per game while starting only five games last season with Sacramento.
He will be entering his 21st season with his eighth team.
Expensive expansion
The cost of the extensive renovation to make Seattle’s KeyArena ready for a potential NHL team has risen to about $700 million.
The new price tag was presented as part of a Seattle City Council committee presentation Thursday. When the memorandum of understanding was signed between the city and Oak View Group last December, the cost of the renovation was expected to be roughly $600 million.
OVG is privately financing the renovation in the hope the new building will attract an NHL expansion franchise. City officials working with OVG say the group will be able to handle the additional cost.
OVG is hoping to be able to start construction on the project in October with an ambitious timeline of having the building completed by October 2020.
