Riske advances with comeback win
One day after defeating second-seeded Angelique Kerber, McMurray native Alison Riske won in similar fashion Thursday at the Mallorca Open.
Riske dropped the first set before battling back to outlast Polona Hercog in three sets, 3-6, 7-5 and 6-3, to advance to Friday’s quarterfinals.
The quarterfinals match Riske against Australian Samathan Stosur today at 12:30 p.m.
Zach Johnson, Spieth share lead
Jordan Spieth has no idea what it is like to play from behind at the Travelers Championship.
The defending champion led after every round last year in his first visit to TPC River Highlands, and a shot a 7-under 63 on Thursday to match Zach Johnson for the first-round lead.
Spieth had six birdies and an eagle out the bunker on par-5 sixth hole – a shot reminiscent of the greenside bunker shot that gave him a victory last year over Daniel Berger in a playoff.
Johnson went out in the morning and led for most of the day. He had eight birdies, including six straight on the back nine, one off than the course record.
Rory McIlroy missed a 13-foot putt for par on the final hole that would have given him a share of the lead and finished in a three-way tie for third place with Brian Harmon and Peter Malnati.
Washington native Steve Wheatcroft had a strong start on the back nine to finish 2 under and tied for 37th after the first day.
Wheatcroft birdied four of his first six holes on the back nine.
Brooks Koepka followed his second straight U.S. Open victory with a 68.
Fan injured
by flying hot dog
It was a flying frankfurter and not a foul ball that left a baseball fan with a black eye in Philadelphia.
Kathy McVay says she was at Monday night’s Phillies game when the team’s mascot, the Phillie Phanatic, rolled out his hot dog launcher. McVay was sitting near home plate and, she says, all of a sudden a hot dog wrapped in duct tape struck her in the face.
McVay says she is suffering from a shoulder injury, so she was unable to swat the hot dog away.
She left the game to get checked out at a hospital, and she says she has a small hematoma.
The Phillies apologized to McVay on Tuesday and the team has offered her tickets to any game.
