Kolat recognized

Campbell head coach Cary Kolat was named the 2017 USA Wrestling Women’s Co-Coach of the Year Friday.

Joining Kolat, a Jefferson-Morgan graduate, with the honor was John Smith. Smith and Kolat were the 2017 Women’s World Team coaches, as the two men worked with National Coach Terry Steiner to lead the team to a second-place finish in Paris, France. The U.S. team was led by world champion Helen Maroulis, world silver medalist Alli Ragan and world bronze medalist Becka Leathers.

Last year was Kolat’s first year coaching the Women’s World Team. Kolat has coached women before, though, doing so at the Pan American Championships.

Kolat has coached four seasons at Campbell. He led the Camels to the 2017 Southern Conference Championship, which was the program’s first conference title.

Pitt baseball

coach resigns

Joe Jordano resigned after 21 years at Pitt. The Panthers were 588-522-2, good for a .530 winning percentage, in his tenure. He was the winningest coach in Pitt baseball history.

Pitt baseball struggled since moving to the ACC five years ago, but the Panthers enjoyed their best success last season, going 29-26 and advancing to the ACC Tournament semifinals.

Jordano’s Panthers never made the NCAA Tournament in his career.

Riske falls in quarterfinals

After advancing to the quarterfinals in the Mallorca Open, McMurray native Alison Riske fell to Samantha Stosur.

The Australian defeated Riske in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Stosur ripped six aces, while Riske had eight double faults.

After winning both qualifier matches, Riske defeated Angelique Kerber in the round of 32 and Polona Hercog in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinal match.

Bylsma hired

by Red Wings

Dan Bylsma is returning to the state where he was born – and where he won the Stanley Cup as a visiting coach.

The Detroit Red Wings hired Bylsma as an assistant coach. The 47-year-old Bylsma, a Grand Haven native, worked as an assistant alongside Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill at this year’s world championship in Denmark, helping the United States to a bronze medal. Bylsma was Pittsburgh’s coach when the Penguins won the Stanley Cup in 2009 by winning Game 7 of the final at Detroit.

Bylsma is 320-190-55 as a head coach in the NHL. He took over the Penguins during that 2008-09 season and was with them until 2014. He also coached the Buffalo Sabres for two seasons from 2015-2017. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s coach of the year in 2011.

WVU’s Carter drafted

West Virginia University guard Jevon Carter was drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies in the second round of the NBA Draft late Thursday night.

Carter, the 32nd overall pick, was touted by many scouts and analysts as one of the best perimeter defenders in the draft.

The 22-year-old played in 144 games over his four-year career with the Mountaineers. Carter scored 17.3 points per game last season with 6.6 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 3.0 steals. He was a second-team All American, the NABC Defensive Player of the Year and a Wooden Award finalist.

Carter now joins the Grizzlies, who finished with the second worst record (22-60) in the NBA last season. Before drafting Carter, Memphis drafted Jaren Jackson Jr. with the No. 4 overall pick.
