Reggiano ties Meadows record

A $23,000 claimer two starts back, Reggiano barreled past the leader down the backside to easily win Saturday’s $18,000 Preferred Handicap at The Meadows in 1:49.1.

The time ties a track record for older gelding pacers. Reggiano now shares the record with Atta Boy Dan and Escape The News.

Reggiano was sitting fourth and appeared to be in a spot of trouble thanks to the erratic uncovered move of Major Nemesis, who could have pinned him in. But once Tony Hall was able to maneuver Reggiano off the cones, the 6-year-old son Stonebridge Terror-Western Prima gobbled up Stride Of Pride and defeated Dapper Dude by 5-1/2 lengths while Born Of Fire rallied for show.

David McNeight, Jr. trains Reggiano, who lifted his lifetime bankroll to $309,724, for Kenneth Owczarczak and Courtney McNeight.

Miles signs

with Kings

Former West Virginia basketball player Daxter Miles signed a two-way contract with the Sacramento Kings Friday.

Miles, a guard from Baltimore, Md., was a four-year starter at WVU. His best season as a Mountaineer came in his senior year, during which Miles scored 12.9 points per game, while shooting 35 percent from behind the arc and setting career highs in field goal percentage (.447) and free throw percentage (.741).

Miles started 124 games in his WVU career, which puts him second all time. Only Johannes Herber has started more men’s basketball games in a Mountaineers uniform, as Herber started in all 128 games WVU played from 2002-03 to 2005-06.

Miles joins Jevon Carter as a four-year Mountaineer to sign with an NBA team. Carter was drafted by Memphis with the 32nd overall pick in Thursday’s NBA Draft. Both Miles and Carter were 1,000-point scorers at WVU.

As a two-way contract player, Miles can spend between 0-45 days with the Kings. If Miles isn’t with the Kings, he will be in the NBA’s developmental league, the G-League. He will make $75,000 in the G-League and the rookie minimum when in the NBA.

Miller shut down

Cleveland Indians fireman reliever Andrew Miller has been shut down from pitching for 10 days. There is no timetable for his return from a sore right knee.

Miller, who was on the disabled list twice last season with patella tendinitis, has been on the 10-day DL since May 26. He will throw on flat ground Monday.

Miller is 1-3 this season with a 4.40 ERA in 17 appearances. He has struck out 23 batters in 14 1/3 innings.

Jackson ties record

Edwin Jackson will tie an MLB record tomorrow when he pitches for the Oakland A’s against Detroit.

His call-up from Triple-A Nashville to the A’s means Jackson will play for his record-tying 13th MLB team. Jackson, 34, will tie reliever Octavio Dotel.

A former all-star, Jackson has a career 98-120 record with a 4.67 ERA. Last season, he played for Washington and Baltimore. Before then, he played for San Diego, Miami, Atlanta, both Chicago teams, St. Louis, Arizona, Tampa Bay and the Dodgers.

U.S. Open seeding

The U.S. Open will consider pregnancy as a factor when determining women’s seeding at future tournaments.

The move by the United States Tennis Association comes off the heels of the French Tennis Federation’s seeding of Serena Williams last month. Williams was the No. 1 player in the world before her pregnancy. She is now ranked at No. 183 and was unseeded in the French Open.
