College baseball
Junior Tanner Gaerke pitched eight innings and struck out seven as No. 4 Washington & Jefferson responded from a season-opening, extra-inning loss to Case Western Reserve with an 8-2 victory against the Spartans Sunday at Ross Memorial Park.
W&J opens Presidents’ Athletic Conference action today with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Bethany, where the Presidents will serve as the visitors for both games.
Ryan Sciullo had a triple and drove in three runs lead W&J at the plate and Justin Griffin doubled and scored two runs.
Men’s lacrosse
Washington & Jefferson pulled away with a seven-goal third quarter Sunday to open the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference campaign with a 16-3 win against visiting Mount St. Joseph.
W&J scored the first 14 goals. Pat Heidecker scored five goals and added an assist, and Ben Ward found the net four times..
In the NHL
Evgenii Dadonov scored twice, Roberto Luongo made 39 saves and the Florida Panthers beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 on Sunday for their season-best sixth straight victory – all at home.
Aleksander Barkov scored his 25th goal of the season and had an assist, and Jonathan Huberdeau added a goal. The Panthers are in the final Eastern Conference playoff position.
- Filip Forsberg scored at 1:07 of overtime and the Nashville Predators matched the franchise record with their eighth straight victory, beating the Colorado Avalanche 4-3.
Nashville has won nine in a row against Colorado, including three this season.
- Jakob Silfverberg and Corey Perry each scored twice and the Anaheim Ducks earned points at home for the eighth game in a row, beating the Chicago Blackhawks 6-3.
- Trading deadline acquisition Tomas Tatar scored his first goal with the Golden Knights and the Vegas avoided its first four-game losing streak of the season with a 3-2 victory over New Jersey, handing the Devils their third-straight loss.
Deryk Englland and David Perron also scored for the Golden Knights. Marc-Andre Fleury, who stopped a half-dozen excellent chances in the first period, made 33 saves, including a last-second shot by Kyle Palmieri to win for the 22nd time in 33 games.
In the NBA
Taurean Prince hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 7.6 seconds remaining and finished with 22 points, helping the Atlanta Hawks hold off the Phoenix Suns 113-112 on Sunday.
Devin Booker’s potential winner for Phoenix, a 15-foot shot from the right baseline, bounced off the rim with Tyler Dorsey defending as time expired.
- The Cleveland Cavaliers will be without starting center Tristan Thompson for several games because of a sprained right ankle.
Thompson injured his heel when he was stepped on by one of Denver’s players during the first half of Saturday’s loss to the Nuggets. He stayed in the game and finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, but the team said he experienced “significant swelling” overnight and tests revealed the sprain. The Cavs said he will miss “multiple games.”
