Wild Things

sign pitcher

As the Frontier League season draws closer, the Wild Things continue shaping their roster. They announced Tuesday the signing of right-handed pitcher Danny Garmendia.

Garmendia comes to Washington after being released from the Kansas City Royals organization and a successful run at Keiser University in Florida. He is the 14th pitcher to sign with Washington for 2018.

Garmendia helped Keiser reach the NAIA world series last year, when he was named Pitcher of the Year in the Sun Conference and an NAIA All-American. He had a 10-3 record and 2.48 ERA for the Seahawks and opponents batted only .196 against him.

After his junior season, Garmendia signed with Royals, becoming only the second Keiser player to sign with a pro team. He pitched for two rookie-ball teams.

“He played at a very high level with the Royals last season after shouldering 100-plus innings in college,” Wild Things assistant general manager Tony Buccilli said. “A lot of teams were pursuing Danny to remain a reliever but we discussed flipping him back to a starter and I believe that separated us as a landing spot.”
