Penguins sign Finnish defenseman

The Pittsburgh Penguins signed defenseman Juuso Riikola to a one-year, entry-level contract.

Riikola, 24, spent the past few weeks representing Finland at the World Championships, where he had two assists and was plus-4 in eight games.

The 6-0, 190-pound Riikola, a left-handed shot, has played the last six seasons with KalPa in Finland’s top professional league. He made his debut as a 19-year-old in 2012-13. He has served as an alternate captain for his club each of the last three years.

Riikola improved his offensive numbers over his six professional seasons. This past season, he scored a career-high eight times and added 16 assists for 24 points in 59 games.

Riikola went undrafted in the NHL Draft. He was teammates with Olli Maatta on Finland’s 2013 World Junior Championship squad.

Waynesburg women 2nd at ECAC track

The Waynesburg University women’s track & field team completed its two-day run at the ECAC Championships Thursday by placing second in the team scoring out of 28 schools.

The Yellow Jackets piled up 79 points. Host Johns Hopkins won with 135.5 points.

Waynesburg was led by senior Addy Knetzer, who won the shot put with a top toss of 44-5 1/4. The Chartiers-Houston graduate almost added a second gold medal in the discus, finishing second by 20 inches.

The Yellow Jackets’ 3,200-meter relay team, which consisted of seniors Elinore Loch, Julie Gerber and Angie Marchetti, and junior Teghan Simonton, finished in first place with a time of 9:47.01, winning by almost 10 seconds.

Browns, Cardinals working on trade

The Arizona Cardinals are finalizing a trade that would bring cornerback Jamar Taylor from the Cleveland Browns, two people with knowledge of the situation said Friday.

The people, who sought anonymity because the trade had not been officially announced, said the deal was expected to be completed Friday.

The trade would help fill a significant need for the Cardinals – a cornerback to play opposite Patrick Peterson. The Browns would receive a sixth-round draft pick.

The impending deal was first reported by NFL.com’s Ian Rappaport.

The 27-year-old Taylor played the last two seasons with the Browns, with three interceptions and 23 passes defensed in 31 games. He played his first three NFL seasons with Miami after being drafted in the second round out of Boise State. He was acquired by Cleveland in a draft-day trade in 2016.

Taylor was a team captain but the Browns have been shopping him since before the draft. New general manager John Dorsey has completely overhauled Cleveland’s secondary and Taylor would be the sixth player he’s traded since taking over the team in December.
