Winning pitcher Richie Dell homered, Tyler Bedillion smacked three doubles and South Fayette scored eight runs in the third inning en route to a 14-4 victory in six innings over West Mifflin in the WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinals Monday at Peterswood Park.
South Fayette (15-5) advances to play Hopewell in the semifinals today (2 p.m.) at the Burkett Complex. The Lions used the big third inning to overcome a 4-0 deficit.
South Fayette had 15 hits, including a three-run homer and a double by Dell, who drove in four runs. Leadoff hitter Joey Alcorn doubled and drove in four runs.
Dell gave up six hits but walked only one batter and struck out nine.
Union 7, Monessen 6: Winning pitcher Bryce Smith hit a game-winning bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning as Union edged Monessen 7-6 in a WPIAL Class A quarterfinal game Monday afternoon at the Burkett Complex.
Monessen (11-7), which was coming off the first playoff win in program history, trailed 6-1 before rallying to tie the score with a five-run top of the seventh inning.
Union (13-3) then scored the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh. It was the second year in a row that the Scotties defeated Monessen in walkoff fashion in a playoff game at Burkett.
Errors proved to be Monessen’s undoing as the Greyhounds committed five that led to five unearned runs by Union.
Antonio Rhome had two hits and two RBI for Monessen. In the seventh, the Greyhounds drew three walks to load the bases and Cam Frolo was hit by a pitch to make it 6-2. Rhome’s two-run single pulled Monessen to within 6-4 and Nick Baker walked to load the bases.
Vincenzo Rhome then delivered a two-run single that tied the score.
In the bottom of the seventh, Union loaded the bases without hitting a ball out of the infield, taking advantage of two errors. Smith then hit a long drive to center field that win the game for the Scotties.
