Matt Popeck led all scorers with 27 points as Waynesburg pulled away in the middle of the second half then held off a late charge to defeat Fredonia, 81-78, in a non-conference game.

With the game tied at 55-55 midway through the second half, the Yellow Jackets went on a 22-10 run to take command.

Fredonia (0-3) cut the deficit to four points, 79-75, which made a pair of Nate Gearhart free throws pivotal with 30 seconds remaining. Gearhart made both.

Popeck, a Washington High School graduate, also had five rebounds and three assists. Frank Bozicevic and Brennan Smith also reached double figures for Waynesburg (1-2) with 15 and 11 points, respectively.

Juniata 69, Wash & Jeff 62: A sluggish first half gave way to a fast-paced, high-scoring second half as Juniata ended Washington & Jefferson’s two-game winning streak, defeating the Presidents 69-62 in a non-conference game.

Brandon Martinazzi and Jake Holsopple paced a Juniata (2-2) offense that led 22-17 at halftime. Martinazzi finished with a game-high 26 points. Holsopple scored 21.

Coming off of the bench, freshman guard Primo Zini led Washington & Jefferson (2-3) with 25 points. The Presidents found a majority of their offense from players that did not start the game, as 38 of their 62 points came from the bench.

Zini was the only player to score in double figures for W&J, which had two consecutive wins for the first time since February 2017.
