Girls soccer
Jordan Sekora scored four goals, including the game winner with 1:34 remaining in overtime, to lead McGuffey over Geibel, 4-3, in a Section 2-A match.
Sekora, who is typically the starting goalkeeper for the Highlanders, scored three goals in the first half before returning to the net in the second half. She then moved back up to the attack in overtime.
McGuffey (2-4, 2-5) ended a five-game losing streak.
- Rhea Kijowski and Kylie Sinn combined for seven goals and four assists as Waynesburg rolled to a 10-0 victory over visiting Derry in Section 3-AA.
It was the second consecutive 10-0 win for the Raiders (8-1, 10-2), who remained a half-game behind section leader South Park. Waynesburg hosts South Park Saturday night.
Kijowski led the offense for the raiders with four goals and two assists. Sinn followed with three goals and two assists, sisters Elise and Brenna benke each scored a goal and Reagan Carlson tallied the other goal.
Goalkeeper McKenzie Booth had the shutout and needed to make only one save against the Trojans (1-7, 1-9).
- Alyssa Clutter had a hat trick and Trinity won its fifth consecutive game with an 8-0 shutout victory over Woodland Hills in Section 3-AAA Monday.
Sam Schury and Hannah Abbondanza each scored twice for the Hillers, who improve to 6-2 in section play and 10-2 overall.
- Section 2-AAAA leader Moon scored three second-half goals and rallied to beat Canon-McMillan 3-1.
Annabel Thomas gave the Big macs a 1-0 lead, but Moon’s Chloe Kuminoski, Ellie Hill and Anna Molnar each scored to help the Tigers improved to 7-1-2 in the section and 9-1-2 overall. Canon-McMillan is 4-5-1 in section and 6-5-1 overall.
- Alyssa Wright scored two goals and Kasey Scears made seven saves as Chartiers-Houston blanked host Charleroi 5-0 in Section 2-A.
The win has Chartiers-Houston (7-1, 8-5) a half-game behind first-place Bentworth. Charleroi slipped to 3-3, 3-4.
Wright, Keely Acor and Lexi Herriott scored goals as C-H forged a 3-0 lead at halftime. Desiree Hancq had a second-half tally and Wright ended the scoring with her second goal.
Penguins reassign 2
The Pittsburgh Penguins assigned forward Zach Aston-Reese and defenseman Zach Trotman to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League.
Attached is the Penguins’ current 24-man roster, which includes 13 forwards, eight defensemen and three goaltenders. The Penguins begin the regular season Thursday by hosting the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals.
Players of the week
The Waynesburg University men’s soccer team picked up a pair of weekly awards from the conference, as sophomore goalkeeper Adam Dolan was named PAC Defensive, Goalkeeper of the Week, and freshman Thomas Robinson was named PAC Rookie of the Week.
Dolan allowed one goal over 180 minutes. He made two saves in Waynesburg’s 6-0 PAC-opening win Saturday over Saint Vincent. It was his first shutout of the season. The sophomore made eight saves to keep Waynesburg alive before falling 1-0 to 24th-ranked Mount Union last Tuesday.
Robinson scored a pair of second-half goals against the Bearcats to help put the game out of reach. Robinson came off the bench against the Bearcats and attempted four shots, three of which were on goal.
- Waynesburg freshman Leesha Wagner was honored as the PAC Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week.
Wagner scored two goals in Waynesburg’s 4-1 win over Saint Vincent.
• For the second time this season, W&J goalkeeper Rena Israel has been named the Empire 8 Conference Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week.
Israel backstopped the Presidents to a critical 2-1 victory over St. John Fisher Saturday. The sophomore made four saves.
For the season, Israel has allowed just one goal in 420 minutes of action. Nationally, Israel leads all of Division III in both goals-against average (0.17) and save percentage (.923).
• After playing 180 minutes on defense in Washington & Jefferson’s women soccer shutout wins last week, junior Courtney Finney, a Canonsburg native, was named Presidents’ Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
The Presidents limited Penn State Altoona to 15 shots in a 1-0 road victory Thursday. In the PAC opener Saturday, W&J held the Tomcats to four shots in a 3-0 triumph. Finney was the lone Presidents defender to play all 90 minutes in both matches.
• The California University of Pennsylvania football team earned a pair of weekly honors from the PSAC as junior Nelson Brown was named West Offensive Athlete of the Week and junior Lamont McPhatter II the West Defensive Athlete of the Week.
Brown and McPhatter helped the Vulcans take a 36-24 victory against No. 2-ranked IUP on Saturday in the 10th Coal Bowl.
Brown had three rushing touchdowns for the third-consecutive game and set a season high with 143 rushing yards on 23 carries. He was held to only 27 yards in the first half before accounting for 116 yards and two scores after halftime.
McPhatter was named Coal Bowl MVP following a pivotal 100-yard interception return for a touchdown. He also made eight tackles.
