Boys Soccer

Markello Apodiakos led Belle Vernon with three goals, including two in the first half, as the Leopards defeated Trinity, 4-3, in a Section 3-AAA match.

The loss, and a Greensburg Salem win over Laurel Highlands, knocked the Hillers out of the WPIAL playoffs. Greensburg Salem and Trinity were tied for fourth place and the final spot entering Tuesday night.

Maverick Selvoski also scored for Belle Vernon (8-3-1, 12-5-1).

Trinity ended the season 6-6 in section play and 10-7 overall.

  • Cullin Woytovich and Jace Kepich each had a hat trick to lead Charleroi to a 12-1 win over Bentworth in non-section action.

Phil Banks and Eben McIntyre contributed in the high-scoring attack with two goals apiece, as the Cougars finished the regular season with a perfect 16-0 record.

Bentworth ends the year 4-14 overall.

  • Joey Fonagy finished his high-scoring regular season with another hat trick as Canon-McMillan defeated Shaler, 5-0, in a non-section match.

It is the sixth consecutive victory for the Big Macs, who ended the regular season with a 14-2 overall record and in second place in Section 2-AAAA. Upper St. Clair defeated Baldwin, 4-0, to clinch the section title.

Anderson Jones had a goal and assist for C-M. Chris Viveros also scored.

Girls Soccer

Seven different players scored a goal as Peters Township defeated Allderdice, 7-0, in a non-section match.

The regular-season finale for the Indians extends their winning streak to four consecutive games, including three shutouts, to enter the postseason with a 14-3 overall record.

Hannah Stuck scored a goal and had four assists. Regan LaVigna also had a goal and two assists.

Adams honored

After setting multiple career highs and leading Washington & Jefferson to a 50-43 Homecoming win over Geneva, junior quarterback Jacob Adams was named on the D3football.com Team of the Week.

Adams completed 30 of 50 pass attempts for 432 yards and five touchdowns.

Through seven weeks, Adams ranks second in NCAA Division III with 2,174 yards and 26 touchdown passes.

In the NHL

Kyle Palmieri scored his seventh goal in four games, Keith Kinkaid stopped 24 shots for his second shutout and the New Jersey Devils continued their perfect start, beating the Dallas Stars 3-0.

Late pickup Jean-Sebastien Dea tallied for the third straight game and Blake Coleman added a goal as the Devils (4-0) remained the NHL’s only unbeaten team. The 4-0 start is their best since 1995-96.

  • Kevin Shattenkirk scored the deciding goal in a shootout to lift the New York Rangers over the Colorado Avalanche 3-2.

Mats Zuccarello scored for the Rangers in the first round of the tiebreaker, and Mikko Rantanen tied it in the second. Shattenkirk then beat Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov in the third round, and Henrik Lundqvist denied Gabriel Landeskog to secure New York’s second win in six games this season (2-4-0).

  • Jordan Weal scored in the shootout to lift the Philadelphia Flyers over the Florida Panthers 6-5.

Weal had a goal and an assist, and Jakub Voracek also scored in the shootout for the Flyers. Philadelphia had to rally to earn two points after leading by three goals late in the second period.

Wayne Simmonds and Claude Giroux each had two goals for the Flyers.
