Wild Things
sign pitcher
The Washington Wild Things announced Friday that they have signed right-handed pitcher Taso Stathopoulos, who played last season in the Frontier League with the Gateway Grizzlies.
In 12 games (11 starts) with the Grizzlies, the New York native logged 61 innings and had 48 strikeouts. Stathopoulos had a 2-6 record and 4.57 ERA.
Stathopoulos played college baseball at Rhode Island and registered a 6-3 record and 3.03 ERA over four seasons.
“Though we never got to face Taso during his time with Gateway, we constantly saw notes about his outings. We were impressed by his string of quality starts despite the challenges of pitching in the West Division ballparks,” Washington assistant general manager Tony Buccilli said. “Taso has a pitching mentality that aligns with our core values. … We see a ton of potential from his time at Rhode Island and with the Grizzlies, so hopefully we can tap into that upside and he can be a difference maker in 2019.”
Cardinals fire OC
The Arizona Cardinals have fired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy a day after the team was blown out at home by the Denver Broncos on national television.
The team said in a statement Friday that quarterbacks coach Byron Leftwich will take over the job for a club that is 1-6, the worst record in the league.
McCoy, former head coach of the San Diego Chargers, was fired for the second time in as many seasons. He was let go after 10 games as Broncos coordinator last year.
The Cardinals lost 45-10 on Thursday night, trailing 21-3 after one quarter and 35-3 at the half. Wilks called the effort “embarrassing.”
Leftwich is a holdover from the staff of coach Bruce Arians, who retired after last season and was known for his dynamic offense.
Source: Lynch
to miss month
Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch will miss at least a month because of a groin injury.
A person familiar with the injury said Friday that an MRI this week determined the severity of the injury. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not made any announcement.
Lynch was hurt last week in Oakland’s 27-3 loss to Seattle in London. The Raiders (1-5) are off this week and will play again on Oct. 28 at home against Indianapolis. Oakland could choose to place Lynch on injured reserve, which would require him to miss at least eight weeks.
