Josh O’Hare rushed for 183 yards and scored two touchdowns to help Canon-McMillan wrap up a playoff berth in the Class 6A Quad County Conference with a 43-13 victory over Butler on Friday.
O’Hare scored on runs of 54 and 2 yards for the Big Macs (3-5, 4-5). Jonathan Quinque completed 5 of 9 passes for 89 yards and a TD that put C-M up 34-13 at halftime. Drew Engel caught a 4-yard TD pass from Quinque and scored on a 16-yard run. Josh Byers kicked a 39-yard field goal.
Kyle Callihan ran for 100 yards and threw for 108 for Butler (0-8, 0-10).
California 35, Mapletown 0
California scored 21 first-quarter points en route to a 35-0 victory over Mapletown that enabled the Trojans to finish in a three-way tie for first place in the Tri-County South Conference.
California (6-1, 6-4) finished in a tie with West Greene and Monessen for the conference title. All three teams have qualified for the Class A playoffs. A coin flip will determine the order of finish for the conference. The loser of the coin flip will make the playoffs as one of the two Class A wild cards.
Five different players scored touchdowns for California. Cochise Ryan started it with a nine-yard run, and Jelani Stafford and Jaedan Zuzak added scoring runs before the first quarter would end.
Lucas Qualk had a 24-yard TD run in the second quarter and Malik Ramsey returned a kick for a touchdown in the third quarter.
Mapletown finished the season at 0-7, 0-10 and have lost 16 consecutive games.
West Greene 20, Union 6
Kolin Walker and Gavin Scott scored second-quarter touchdowns and West Greene slogged its way past Union 20-6 in the nonconference regular-season finale.
Union (3-7), a school in New Castle, made its second trip to Greene County in three weeks and took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter when Michael Flowers scored on a three-yard run.
The Scotties, however, were blanked the rest of the way. West Greene (7-3), which finished in a three-way for the Tri-County South Conference title, took the lead with a pair of second-quarter touchdowns. Walker tied the score at 6-6 on a seven-yard TD run, and Scott raced 13 yards for the go-ahead score with 2:57 left before halftime.
Brock Bedilion sealed the win for West Greene with a four-yard TD run with 6:44 left in the game. Walker led the Pioneers’ ground game with 78 yards on 20 carries.
Monessen 30, Avella 0
Justin Towler scored on two long touchdown runs as Monessen broke open a close game in the second half and defeated Avella 30-0 to garner a share of the Tri-County South Conference championship.
Monessen (6-1, 7-2) finishes in a three-way tie for first place with California and West Greene. A coin flip Monday will decide the order of finish for playoff seeding.
The Greyhounds led by only 6-0 at halftime as Vaughn Taylor had a one-yard TD plunge in the first quarter. Monessen broke the game open by scoring 12 points in both the third and fourth quarters.
Towler scored on runs of 33 and 52 yards, Isaiah Beltram caught a 24-yard TD pass from Devin Whitlock and Greg Adams capped the scoring with an eight-yard run.
South Fayette 31, Montour 0
Jamie Diven passed for three touchdown as South Fayette routed Montour, 31-0, in a Class 4A Northwest 8 Conference game.
The win assures the Lions (7-0, 9-1) the outright title in the conference.
Diven, who completed 12 of 27 passes for 237 yards, hit RayQuin Glover from 41 yards, Andrew Franklin from 6 yards out and Mike Trimbur from 51. Diven also ran one in from 5 yards out. Trimbur had 7 receptions for 89 yards and Franklin rushed for 48 yards on 8 carries.
Bentworth 29, Jefferson-Morgan 7
Trent Cavanaugh rushed for 166 yards and scored twice to help Bentworth rally for a 29-7 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game.
Cavanaugh scored on runs of 7 and 4 yards and threw a 13-yard TD pass to Bruce Hook for the Bearcats (4-3, 5-5). Owen Petrisek rushed for 69 yards on 16 carries, scored on a 3-yard run and caught a 2-point conversion pass. Trevor Richardson added a 35-yard field goal.
Justin Maddich gave Jefferson-Morgan (2-5, 2-8) a 7-0 first-quarter lead when he caught a 25-yard pass from Jacob Broadwater.
Carmichaels 18, Brownsville 0
Kevin Kelly ran for a touchdown, passed for another Carmichaels scored two safeties in the third quarter during an 18-0 victory over Brownsville in an Interstate Conference game.
Brownsville (0-7, 0-10) lost a fumble at its on nine-yard line with less than 10 seconds remaining in the first half. On the next play, Kelly scored on a run to give the Mikes a 6-0 lead.
In the third quarter, Carmichaels (1-6, 2-7) scored two safeties, one on a bad shotgun snap and the other after Brownsvilel started a drive at its own three-yard line.
Following the second safety, Kelly threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Billy Piper, and Hunter Voithofer ran in the two-point conversion to close the scoring.
The teams combined for 14 fumbles in the muddy game.
Belle Vernon 55, Ringgold 0
Belle Vernon prepared for the Class 4A playoffs by blanking Ringgold 55-0 in a Big Eight Conference game at Joe Montana Stadium.
The Leopards (6-1, 8-1) scored 20 points in each of the first two quarters. Ryan Hamer was the only player with more than one touchdown. he scored on runs of 12 yards in the second quarter and 15 yards in the third quarter. Hamer rushed for a game-high 94 yards on 16 carries.
Andrew Pacak, Anthony Bertram, Larry Calloway, Mason Pascoe and Gage Rogge all had first-half TDs for the leopards and Tyler Kovatch returned a punt 42 yards for a score in the fourth quarter.
Keystone Oaks 41, Waynesburg 6
Michael Dauer and C.J. Morrow combined for six touchdowns on the way to a 41-6 victory by Keystone Oaks over Waynesburg in a Class 3A Tri-County West Conference game.
Dauer scored on runs of 57, 4, 2 and 29 yards for KO (3-4, 6-4). Dauer finished with 169 yards on eight carries. Logan Schrubb completed 7 of 8 passes for 150 yards, including two TD passes to Morrow.
Nate Stephenson opened the scoring with a 7-yard score. He finished with 63 yards on 23 carries for Waynesburg (0-7, 2-8).
In other games
Charleroi rallied for a 34-24 victory over Apollo-Ridge in a nonconference game. Serra Catholic held off Fort Cherry 19-7 in the Three Rivers Conference. No game details were provided to the Observer-Reporter by press time.
