Boys soccer

Markello Apodiakos and Aaron Brown each scored a goal in the opening half as Belle Vernon held off a comeback attempt from West Mifflin to defeat the Titans, 2-1.

Leopards’ goalkeeper TJ Watson made four saves on five shots.

  • Senior goalkeeper Nathan Lynch made eight saves as Monessen opened its regular season with a 0-0 draw against McKeesport.

Monessen had its opportunity to score with seven shots on goal but couldn’t capitalize.

  • Bentworth dropped a pair of games in the Fayette County Boys Soccer Invitational, falling to Uniontown, 3-1, and to Laurel Highlands, 8-2.

Tied 1-1 with six minutes left against Uniontown, the Bearcats surrendered two late goals.

Brian Hustava had the lone goal for Bentworth in Game 1, and Leyton Hustava had two goals in the second game.

Jaxon Selvoski combined to make 20 saves on the day.

  • Chartiers-Houston needed penalty kicks to determine a winner.

Tied 1-1, the Bucs defeated Burrell 6-5 to win the shootout and the game, 2-1.

Girls soccer

Jocelyn Timlin had a hat trick to lead Bentworth to a 6-0 victory over Uniontown.

Timlin led the offensive attack for the Bearcats but had plenty of help with goals from Paige Marshalek, Rori Schreiber and Caroline Rice.

Goalkeeper Cande Kossel recorded a shutout for Bentworth.

Kossel then equaled that effort with another shutout as the Bearcats defeated Ringgold, 2-0.

Paige Marshalek had a pair of goals for Bentworth.

  • A Madison Hlasnick throw and a pass from Alyssa Daugherty led to an Ashley Horvath goal with 14 minutes left as Chartiers-Houston defeated Our Lady of Sacred Heart, 1-0.

Bucs’ goalkeeper Kasey Scears recorded a shutout with seven saves.

  • Hayley Francis scored two of the three second-half goals as McKeesport topped Monessen, 3-0, in the season opener for both teams.
  • Regan LaVigna scored off of a corner kick in overtime to lift Peters Township to a 2-1 victory over Mercyhurst Prep in the South Hills Classic.

The game was sent into extra time when Hannah Stuck scored late in regulation.

Men’s soccer

A pair of goals 12 minutes apart in the first half lifted Wooster over Washington & Jefferson, 2-0, in a non-conference game.

Max Rochester and Bennett Anderson scored for Wooster in the physical game, which ended with nine combined yellow cards between the two teams.

The Presidents only registered four shots. Goalkeeper Nick Stasko made three saves for W&J.

The loss drops the Presidents to 1-1.

Women’s soccer

A pair of late goals lifted Millersville over California, 3-1, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game.

Tied 1-1 in the second half, Rachel Leisher scored in the 75th minute and Kay Liebi scored an insurance goal.

Cal (0-1, 1-1) scored its lone goal in the 49th minute when Kiley Austin found Kellie Lynch, which tied the game at 1-1.

  • Jill Moyer scored a goal at the five-minute mark and Waynesburg turned to its defense to defeat Hilbert, 3-0, in a non-conference game.

The Yellow Jackets limited Hilbert to only two shots on goal throughout the game.

Emily Hill and Leesha Wagner each scored a goal in the final 10 minutes as Waynesburg (2-0) pulled away.

Raiders trade Mack

The Oakland Raiders waived Martavis Bryant just traded holdout pass rusher Khalil Mack to Chicago for a package that included two first-round picks.

Oakland also acquired backup quarterback AJ McCarron from Buffalo.
