Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Chad Kuhl underwent reconstructive surgery on his right elbow and will miss the entire 2019 season.

The team said Kuhl had the surgery Wednesday in New York. Kuhl went 5-5 with a 4.55 ERA in 16 starts for Pittsburgh this season. The Pirates initially placed him on the disabled list because of right forearm soreness following a loss to the New York Mets June 26.

Kuhl took a month off hoping to avoid surgery. But he recently endured a setback when the pain resurfaced. He called the decision to have surgery “difficult” but is confident he’ll return down the road.

The 26-year-old Kuhl is 18-20 with a 4.27 ERA in three seasons with the Pirates.

National League

Cincinnati 4, Miami 2: Cody Reed was a winner in his first major league star and Scooter Gennett homered and doubled to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-2 win over the Miami Marlins.

Reed (1-2) scattered five hits and struck out six in six shutout innings. The left-hander joined the starting rotation Aug. 30 and has thrown 11 consecutive scoreless innings.

Gennett’s two-run home run in the seventh gave Cincinnati a 4-0 lead. Gennett’s blast off Miami reliever Elieser Hernandez landed in the upper deck in right field and was his 23rd homer.

Billie Jean King buys into Dodgers: Billie Jean King and partner Ilana Kloss have joined the Los Angeles Dodgers ownership group.

The Dodgers made the announcement Thursday. The tennis great said Dodgers owner and chairman Mark Walter and the organization have proven to be leaders in sports on and off the field.

American League

Oakland 21, L.A. Angeles 3: Marcus Semien had three hits and a career-high five RBIs, Stephen Piscotty homered and drove in four runs and the Oakland Athletics hammered the Los Angeles Angels 22-3.

The Athletics reduced their magic number for clinching a playoff berth to five, setting season high for runs and hits with 22. Since June 15, Oakland is a major league- best 58-25.
