Wings edge Penguins
Michael Rasmussen, Andreas Athanasiou and Trevor Daley scored in a 5:47 span in the second period, and Harri Sateri made 29 saves in the Detroit Red Wings’ 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins Sunday.
Ryan Haggerty and Teddy Blueger scored for the Penguins.
Casey DeSmith started for Pittsburgh, and allowed all three goals on 10 shots in his half of the game. Tristan Jarry made 20 saves.
Duquesne
falls at Hawaii
Cole McDonald threw five touchdown passes to four different receivers and Hawaii limited Duquesne to just 166 total yards as the Rainbow Warriors beat the Dukes 42-21 late Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.
McDonald was 24-of-40 passing for 273 yards with one interception. Junior Dayton Furuta, who came in with 75 career rushing yards, had 12 carries for 114 yards for Hawaii (4-1).
Duquesne’s Daniel Parr threw touchdown passes 56 seconds apart to make it 14-0 midway through the first quarter, but McDonald capped drives of eight, nine and 11 plays with scoring strikes to give the Rainbow Warriors a seven-point lead going into the break. Hawaii’s Zach Wilson intercepted a pass on the first possession of the second half to set up a 2-yard TD run by Fred Holly III and McDonald’s 1-yard touchdown pass to Dakota Torres with 7:48 to play made it 35-14.
The Dukes (3-2) had their three-game win streak snapped.
John Ursua finished with five catches for 77 yards and two touchdowns, Cedric Byrd added seven receptions for 55 yards and a score and JoJo Ward had 89 yards receiving and one TD on six catches for Hawaii.
Penguins trim roster
The Pittsburgh Penguins have reduced their training camp roster to 27 players.
Pittsburgh assigned 18 players to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League, including forwards Tobias Lindberg, Jimmy Hayes, Adam Johnson, Joseph Cramarossa, Thomas Di Pauli, Teddy Blueger, Sam Miletic, Sam Lafferty, Anthony Angello, Linus Olund, Garrett Wilson and Ryan Haggerty; defensemen Chris Summers, Stefan Elliott, Will O’Neill, Jeff Taylor and Ethan Prow; and goaltender John Muse.
The Penguins also terminated the contract of forward Frederik Tiffels.
Women’s soccer
Washington & Jefferson was unable to overcome three first-half goals by Case Western Reserve in a 3-0 setback Sunday at Alexandre Stadium.
W&J’s record dropped to 2-5-1 overall.
Quinnipiac lacrosse program suspended
Quinnipiac University officials have confirmed that the school’s men’s lacrosse team has been suspended, effectively immediately.
The team is being investigated for possible violations of the university’s student conduct policy, which touches on everything from underage drinking to abuse. Bushnell says the “university has zero tolerance for any behavior that endangers any member of the university community.”
The team’s season is scheduled to begin in February.
In golf
Steve Stricker won the inaugural Sanford International Sunday for his third PGA Tour Champions title of the year, closing with a 3-under 67 for a four-stroke victory.
The 51-year-old Stricker birdied three of the first four holes and offset bogeys on 13 and 18 with birdies on 15 and 16. He shared the lead after each of the first two rounds, shooting 63-67 at Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Stricker finished at 13-under 197, and match Paul Broadhurst for the tour victory lead.
Tim Petrovic (65) and Jerry Smith (70) tied for second.
