Girls soccer
Courtney Dahiquist netted a pair of goals in Trinity’s 3-0 non-section win over Seton-LaSalle at home.
Sam Schury tallied the other goal for the Hillers (7-2), while Sarah Kuhns recorded the shutout with five saves.
The loss drops Seton-La Salle’s overall record to 3-4-1.
- Three players scored two goals to push Bentworth past Beth-Center, 7-0, in Section 2-A.
Paige Marshalek, Jocelyn Timlin and Rori Schreiber each scored twice for Bentworth (6-0, 8-2). Lindsay Davis scored one.
Beth-Center fell to 2-3 and 3-5.
- Sara Meindl scored twice to help South Fayette down Charters Valley, 3-1, in Section 4-AA.
Rachel Weiss scored the other goal for SF (4-2, 7-2). Morgan Martani had the goal for CV (1-5, 3-6).
- Chartiers-Houston flexed its defensive muscle and shutout McGuffey, 4-0, in Section 2-A action.
Kasey Scears registered the shutout with one stop for the Buccaneers (5-1, 6-4).
Ashley Horvath collected two goals and an assist in the win, while Carolyn Mankey tallied two helpers. Desiree Hancq and Alyssa Wright netted the other goals for C-H.
McGuffey is now 1-4 in section and 1-5 overall.
- Kylie Sinn scored the game-winning at the 21:21 mark of the second half in Waynesburg’s 2-1 win over Brownsville in a Section 3-AA match.
Rhea Kijowski gave the Raiders (5-1, 7-2) a 1-0 lead in the first half. Grace Stetson tied in the second half for Brownsville.
Boys Soccer
Trinity garnered a huge Section 3-AAA win at home and gave Laurel Highlands their first section loss of the season with a 4-1 victory.
Itlo DeLuca compiled two goals for the Hillers (3-4, 5-5), while Mason Pendergast totaled a goal and an assist in the win. Austin Aber had the other goal, while Jacob Paez and Elijah Cincinnati both had assists.
Colby Thomas recorded seven stops in net.
Laurel Highlands drops to 6-1-1 in the section and 8-2-1 overall.
- Charleroi picked up a non-section win at home with a 6-0 triumph over California.
Nick Laskey and Colin Woytovich had a pair of goals for the Cougars (9-0), while Nick Goodwin made one save to preserve the shutout.
California is now 0-10 overall.
Players honored
Freshman Aubrey Wingeart was honored as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Women’s Cross Country Rookie of the Week.
Wingeart ran to a fourth-place finish Saturday at the Waynesburg Invitational with a time of 21:56.50.
- Junior linebacker Tyler Smith played a major role in Waynesburg’s 10-7 win over Geneva on Saturday and was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Defensive Player of the Week.
Smith recorded a career-high 12 total tackles, seven of which were solo stops, to go with 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. The Jackets limited the league’s top-ranked rushing offense to 208 yards, 120 less than their previous 328.0 yards per game average.
- After recording three takeaways over the weekend, including a fumble return for a touchdown, California University junior defensive back Lamont McPhatter II was tabbed the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Defensive Athlete of the Week.
McPhatter tallied two interceptions and an 82-yard fumble return for a touchdown on Saturday, as the Vulcans started divisional play with a 40-35 victory against previously-undefeated Edinboro. He also ranked second on the team in the win with seven tackles, including five solo.
He has eight interceptions while playing in 14 career games with the Vulcans after previously playing at Ball State.
- For the third time this season and the second time in a row, Washington & Jefferson’s duo of Harley Moyer and Damon Gall were named the PAC Men’s Cross Country Runner and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Moyer ran to his third consecutive individual win this season at Saturday’s Waynesburg Invitational, topping a 92-runner field. The senior from Akron, Ohio, completed the 8K course in a time of 25:57.76 (5:13 per mile), 37 seconds quicker than his next competitor.
Gall placed sixth at Saturday’s meet with a time of 27:44.91 (5:34 per mile). Saturday marked the first time this year that the rookie has cracked the top six of a race. Moyer and Gall were two of four W&J runners to place in the top six, which helped the team secure its first victory of 2018.
- After another strong performance to open his sophomore season, W&J wide receiver Andrew Wolf earned his first PAC Offensive Player of the Week award.
Wolf hauled in six passes for a career-best four touchdowns and 196 yards as No. 12/13 W&J routed Grove City, 62-10, at Cameron Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The wide receiver had scoring grabs of 66 and 20 yards in the first quarter and later added an 80-yard catch-and-run in the second quarter and a 15-yard pass in the third period.
Through four weeks of the 2018 campaign, Wolf leads all divisions of NCAA football with 711 receiving yards and 12 receiving touchdowns.
