High school roundup: Bentworth deals Brownsville first loss

Bentworth built a three-run lead then held on for a 4-3 victory over Brownsville in a Section 1-AA baseball game Friday afternoon. It was the first loss of the season for the Falcons, who entered with a 4-0 record.
Both teams scored a run in the fourth but Bentworth (1-0, 4-3) scored three in the fifth inning. Brownsville took advantage of some miscues by Bentworth and scored twice before Justin Kisner got out of the inning. Kisner finished with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts. He also went 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored.
Mike Vittone went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for Bentworth. Austyn Pistilli had an RBI and Shawn Dziak went 2-for-3 and scored a run. The Bearcats had 11 hits but left nine on base.
Preston Frost had a double for Brownsville. Nick Kenney struck out six and walked three but took the loss.
Canon-McMillan 6, Mt. Lebanon 5: Noah Burke drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth-inning and Canon-McMillan made the most of only five hits to beat Mt. Lebanon, 6-5, in a Class 6A Section 3 game at Wild Things Park.
Canon-McMillan (2-0, 5-2) had forged a 4-0 lead in the second inning but Mt. Lebanon battled back and tied the score with a four-run top of the fifth. Burke’s RBI single gave the Big Macs a 5-4 lead and Brycen Virgili followed with a triple that made it 6-4. Virgili also hit a double.
Mt. Lebanon made it a one-run game when Sam LaSota, the No. 9 hitter in the lineup, smacked a solo homer. The Blue Devils had the potential tying run on second base with two outs in the sixth but C-M’s Austin Able was brought on to pitch and he induced a groundout that ended the threat.
Mt. Lebanon (0-1, 3-5) had the leadoff hitter reach base in the seventh but he was erased on a double play.
Tyler Greenleaf was the winning pitcher in relief with Able getting the final four outs for a save.
Casey Burke had a two-run single for Canon-Mac.
Ringgold 10, West Mifflin 3: Gage Fuller and Kevin Field combined on a five-hitter, Chase Angotti had three hits and Dylan Wujcik drove in three runs as Ringgold rolled to a 10-3 victory over visiting West Mifflin in Class 4A Section 3.
Ringgold (2-0, 3-2) scored in each of the first five innings and had an 11-hit attack, led by Angotti, who was 3-for-5 with two runs. Bobby Boyer tripled and drove in three runs.
Fuller and Reid combined for 11 strikeouts and held West Mifflin (1-1, 1-3) scoreless after the second inning.
Carmichaels 16, Burgettstown 3: Gavin Pratt drove in four runs, Dylan Wilson went 4-for-4 and Carmichaels broke open a close game by scoring four runs in the top of the fourth inning and defeated Burgettstown 16-3 in a six-inning Class 2A Section 1 game.
Carmichaels (1-1, 4-1) led 5-3 after three inning than scored six runs in the fourth and five more in the sixth.
Wilson, who scored three times, led the Mikes’ 14-hit attack. The only extra-base hit for Carmichaels was a two-run double by Pratt in the first inning. Zach Gamble had three singles.
Starter Logan Mayhle and reliever Drake Long combined on a one-hitter, a single by Seth Arnold. Carmichaels committed four errors.
Burgettstown is 0-2 in the section and 2-3 overall.
Beth-Center 11, Washington 1: Beth-Center snapped a 1-1 tie by scoring six runs in the fourth inning and went on to defeat visiting Washington 11-1 in a five-inning Class 2A Section 3 game.
Winning pitcher Anthony Dellapenna fired a three-hitter and helped himself at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Andrew Bower led B-C’s 11-hit attack with three singles and three RBI. Ryan Ross had a double.
Washington had only three hits but two of them went for extra bases, a solo home run by Steve Patterson in the fourth inning that tied the score, and a triple by Myles Stevenson.
Beth-Center remained unbeaten in the section at 2-0 and moved to the .500 mark overall at 2-2. Washington is 0-2, 1-5.
Trinity 10, Carrick 3: Brandon Robaugh drove in three runs and combined with winning pitcher Clarence Pomykayla on a seven-hitter as Trinity rolled to a 10-3 victory over visiting Carrick in Class 5A Section 3.
The Hillers (2-0, 6-3) scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to their fifth win in the last six games. Pomykayla allowed three runs (two earned) over six innings. Robaugh pitched the seventh inning and struck out three.
A.J. Chadwick had a double for Trinity and Forrest Havanis was 2-for-4 and scored two runs.
Carrick 0-2 in section and 2-3 overall.
Chartiers-Houston 4, Frazier 0: Chartiers-Houston broke open a scoreless game with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to down Frazier, 4-0, in a Section 1-AA game.
Josh Coletti drive in two runs and Andrew Kowalski doubled, singled and drove in a run for the Bucs (2-0, 2-0). Chase Bitz doubled and Jimmy Sadler tripled. Dustin Weiser struck out 10.
Frazier fell to 0-2 and 2-3.
Monessen 9, Avella 0: Vin Rhome tossed a two-hitter as Monessen shut out Avella, 9-0, in a Section 2-A game.
Rhome walked one and struck out four for Monessen. Jeremiah Quattro drove in three runs.
Avella fell to 1-1 and 1-3.
Jefferson-Morgan 12, Mapletown 1: Bryce Bedilion doubled and drove in three runs to help Jefferson-Morgan to a 12-1 win in five innings in a section 2-A game.
Justin Maddich scored three runs and stole two bases for J-M (1-1, 1-4). Owen Maddich went 2-for-3 and scored three times.
Softball
Chartiers-Houston 17, North Catholic 0: Ella Brookman went 4-for-4 with four extra-base hits, Kaci Alderson and Lauren Lober each drove in five runs and Chartiers-Houston routed North Catholic 17-0 in a three-inning non-section game.
Brookman homered and smacked three doubles, scored three runs and drove in two. She also tossed two hitless innings as the Bucs improved their record to 7-1.
Alderson was 3-for-3 with a home run and double, and Lober went 2-for-3 with a home run. Bella Hess was 3-for-4 and scored three times.
North Catholic’s record is 3-3.
Bentworth 19, Jefferson-Morgan 5: Bentworth unleashed a 21-hit attack, which included four home runs, and rolled to a 19-5 victory over host Jefferson-Morgan in a non-section game.
Jessica Rothka led the potent Bentworth lineup by going 4-for-5 with three doubles, a three-run homer and five RBI. Winning pitcher Leah Lindley hit a two-run homer, Savannah Adams had a two-run homer and a double, and Ashton Watson smacked a solo homer. Katie Babirad went 4-for-5 with four RBI and a double.
Lindley fired a six-hitter and struck out 14 as the Bearcats improved to 3-5.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak by Jefferson-Morgan (3-2). Autumn Gustovich and Maddie Vandivner each doubled for the Rockets.
Belle Vernon 4, Waynesburg 0: Venessa Porter fired a two-hit shutout, and Sophia Godzak and Lindsay Steeber each belted a solo homer as Belle Vernon blanked Waynesburg 4-0 in a non-section game.
Porter struck out seven and walked only one. The Leopards gave a 2-0 lead in the first inning before Steeber homered in the fifth and Godzak followed with her shot while leading off the sixth.
Kaylee Turcheck had a double for Waynesburg (3-3). Ashley Joll double for Belle Vernon.
Burgettstown 7, Our Lady of Sacred Heart 3: Aubry Krivak and Jordan Baronick led a late offensive onslaught to keep Burgettstown undefeated in Class 2A Section 1 with a 7-3 win over Our Lady of Sacred Heart.
The Blue Devils scored three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Baronick went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI for Burgettstown (3-0, 3-3). Krivak, who limited the Chargers to lone runs in the final three innings and struck out seven in a complete game, went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI.
Lexi Stratus also added a pair of hits and a double for Burgettstown.
OLSH falls to 2-2 in the section and 2-4 overall.
