High school baseball

Jimmy Sadler went 3-for-3 and scored four runs, and three Chartiers-Houston pitchers combined on a three-hitter, lifting the Bucs to a 12-1 victory over visiting Greensburg Central Catholic in a five-inning non-section game Saturday.

Starter Austin Kuslock and relievers Zack Baird and Matthew Rieger held GCC to a single run in the third inning. Chartiers-Houston broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Josh Colletti. Andrew Kowalski followed with a run-scoring hit.

The Bucs broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning.

Jimmy Sadler had a double for C-H, as did Destin Weisler, who drove in three runs.

Paul Rice doubled for GCC.

  • Avonworth broke open a close game by scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat visiting Fort Cherry 7-1 in a non-section game.

Avonworth improved its record to 6-1 while Fort Cherry slipped to 4-2.

High school softball

Winning pitcher Sophie Godzak threw sevne strong innings in leading Belle Vernon to a 7-1 non-section victory over Steel Valley on Saturday.

Godzak surrendered one unearned run on three hits. She had nine strikeouts and no walks. Godzak helped her cause with two base hits. Teammate Ashley Joll had three hits, including a double.

The Leopards’ Mekenzie Sokol had two hits, including a double, and two RBI. Jordan French had a two-run single and Vanessa Porter had a double for Belle Vernon (4-5).

Brook Martin had a double for Steel Valley (1-5).

Women’s lacrosse

Washington & Jefferson held Saint Vincent to one second-half goal for a 14-6 win in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play Saturday in Latrobe.

The Presidents improved their record to 4-6 overall and 2-0 in the PAC. The Bearcats are 0-2, 0-6.

Rae LaRochelle scored four times in each half, giving her a career-best eight goals on the day. The junior attacker paces W&J and is third in the PAC with 37 goals.

College baseball

Washington & Jefferson ran its winning streak to 13 games by sweeping a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader from visiting Westminster 9-1 and 12-8.

Santino Platt and Henry Litman combined on a five-hit shutout in the opener and Dante Delesandro went 3-for-4 with a double and triple.

The Presidents led 7-0 after two innings in the second game before Westminster battled back and made it close by scoring sevne times in the eighth inning. Mullen Socha went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and three RBI. Garrett Harstine was the winning pitcher with Clay martin getting the final five outs for a save.

W&J leads the PAC with an 11-0 record. The Presidents are 16-7 overall.

  • Waynesburg swept a PAC doubleahder at Chatham, 10-7 and 7-5, at West Field.

Mason Miller struck out eight over six innings in the opener to improve his record to 5-1. Jonny Kutchman went 4-for-5 with a double and three runs for Waynesburg (8-3, 13-12).

Tyler Reis had a double, triple and three runs in the second game to back the winning pitching of Ty Wickline. Tyler Srbinovich earned a save in both games.

  • California won a pair of PSAC West Division games against Pitt-Johnstown, 4-2 and 8-4, at Wild Things Park.

The Vulcans are 7-3 in the West and 20-7 overall.

Nick Riggle fired a four-hitter in the opening, giving up two unearned runs. Cal did all its scoring in the first two innings. Nico Marchetti and Patrick Brogan each drove in two runs. Marchetti drove in two more in the second game, as did Bill Hitman. Bradyn Kail was the winning pitcher, improving to 5-1 on the season.

College softball

Brooke Lapia hit her first collegiate grand slam and Rachel Johnson reached base six times on the day to help Washington & Jefferson sweep Thiel, 6-4 and 11-7, in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action Saturday at Brooks Park.
