Ben Marsico tossed five scoreless innings of relief, leading Washington & Jefferson to an 8-3 victory over Westminster in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play Sunday.
The victory by W&J secures a three-game series sweep while also extending the Presidents’ winning streak to 14 games. W&J is 12-0 in the PAC and 17-7 overall.
Dante Dalesandro drove in three runs for W&J and Adam Moore’s RBI single in the fifth inning broke a 3-3 tie.
- Waynesburg’s Jordan Kowalski hit a game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Yellow Jackets scored on an error in the 10th to beat Chatham 3-2 in a PAC game.
Waynesburg (8-3, 14-12) swept the three-game series.
Jonny Kutchman allowed two runs (both unearned) over seven innings and Colton Uzzell was the winner with three shutout innings of relief.
Wrestler tackled during HOF speech
Wrestler Bret “The Hitman” Hart was tackled by a spectator Saturday while he was giving a speech during the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
The attacker was promptly subdued by several people, including other wrestlers, who came to Hart’s defense. Hart, 61, is OK.
The person ran toward the ring from the crowd, spectator Alan Fisher told the Associated Press.
“I couldn’t believe that the security had missed him in the first place and the next thing you know there was Shane McMahon and Travis Brown on top of him the crowd was going crazy booing,” Fisher said. “Everyone was cheering when one of the wrestlers punched him.”
New York City Police arrested 26-year-old Zachary Madsen. He faces assault and criminal trespass charges. An email to the district attorney seeking someone who could comment on Madsen’s behalf wasn’t immediately answered.
The induction event resumed, with Hart continuing his speech, after the fan was taken into custody.
In the NBA
LaMarcus Aldridge had 18 points and 13 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs, who are in a three-team scramble to determine playoff seeding in the Western Conference, extended Cleveland’s losing streak to nine games by beating the Cavaliers 112-90 Sunday.
The Spurs recently clinched a postseason spot for a NBA record-tying 22nd year in a row, but they don’t yet know who they’ll play in the first round. San Antonio came into the day in eighth place, which would mean an early matchup with defending champion Golden State.
- Pascal Siakam had 23 points and 10 rebounds, Kawhi Leonard scored 22 points and the Toronto Raptors beat Miami 117-109 in overtime, further denting the Heat’s fading playoff hopes.
- Russell Westbrook had 27 points, 10 rebounds and 15 assists as the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Minnesota Timberwolves, 132-126.
- Kemba Walker scored 20 of his 31 points in the first half to help the Charlotte Hornets build a big lead and they went on to beat the Detroit Pistons, 104-91.
- D’Angelo Russell scored 20 points and Joe Harris added 19, leading the Brooklyn Nets to a 108-96 victory over the Indiana Pacers and back into the NBA playoffs for the first time in four years.
The Nets moved into position to clinch when Miami lost in overtime at Toronto earlier in the day. It’s also the first time since 2014-15 the Nets have not posted a losing record.
Men’s lacrosse
A slow start doomed Washington & Jefferson in a 17-6 loss to Saint Vincent in a PAC match Sunday.
The host Bearcats built a 5-1 lead after the first quarter before carrying a 9-3 advantage into halftime.
