College baseball
Two complete games by the starting pitchers and a pair of three-run doubles sparked California to a PSAC West Division doubleheader sweep over Clarion, 3-1 and 5-1, Friday at Wild Things park.
In the opener, all Cal (10-4, 24-8) needed was a three-run double by Aaron Previsky in the bottom of the second inning because Nick Riggle pitched a six-hitter to improve his record to 5-1. Previsky’s hit gave the Vulcans a 3-1 lead and it stayed that way as Riggle struck out five and did not issue a walk.
In the second game, Nico Marchetti’s three-run double was part of Cal’s five-run second inning. That was enough for Bradyn Kail, who improved to 6-1 on the season by throwing a three-hitter. Kail struck out nine and walked one.
The teams will play another doubleheader today at Clarion (5-9, 15-19).
Water polo
Washington & Jefferson’s women’s water polo team dropped a 14-5 decision to Wittenberg in the opening match of the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championship Tournament Friday afternoon.
Wittenberg never trailed as it built a 3-1 lead after the first before opening up a 9-2 advantage at halftime. The Tigers outscored the Presidents by a 5-3 margin during the second half.
Paige Adams led W&J with three goals.
Walton out as
Lakers coach
Luke Walton is out as coach of the Los Angeles Lakers after three losing seasons.
Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka announced Walton’s departure Friday, three days after the abrupt resignation of president of basketball operations Magic Johnson. Pelinka called Walton leaving a mutual decision.
The former Lakers forward went 98-148 after getting his first permanent head coaching job with the 16-time NBA champions. The former Golden State assistant never led the Lakers to the playoffs, not even after the arrival of LeBron James last summer.
Carolina signs former Patriots receiver
The Panthers have signed unrestricted free agent wide receiver Chris Hogan from the New England Patriots to a one-year contract.
Terms of the deal were not released Friday.
The 30-year-old Hogan spent the last three seasons with the Patriots, winning two Super Bowls playing alongside Tom Brady.
He played in 16 regular season games in 2018, catching 35 passes for 532 yards with three touchdowns. He also had eight receptions for 58 yards in three postseason games.
Montana youth hurt by thrown javelin
A Montana high school student was injured after being struck in the chest by a javelin thrown by another student-athlete during track-and-field practice.
The Flathead Beacon reports Bigfork High School senior Anders Epperly was airlifted to a hospital Thursday with a partially collapsed lung.
Epperly’s father Jim is a coach and was at practice when his son was injured. Jim Epperly says his son is recovering and was fortunate he wasn’t struck in another part of his body.
The Beacon reports Anders Epperly was out of bounds when he was hit.
NFL fines reinstates Redskins’ Foster
Reuben Foster has been fined two game checks and reinstated to the Washington Redskins’ active roster after an NFL investigation into an incident of domestic violence found he did not violate the league’s personal conduct policy.
Foster will be allowed to participate in all team activities, which includes Washington’s offseason program that begins next week.
Foster avoided being suspended in the aftermath of a domestic violence charge from November, which triggered a review based on his previous violations of league policies. Prosecutors in Tampa, Florida, decided in January not to pursue a domestic violence case against the 25-year-old.
