Kentucky Derby day is always a party at The Meadows Racetrack – it’s actually Western Pennsylvania’s largest Derby party.
On May 4, guests can watch live Meadows racing at the track, beginning at 11:25 a.m. Stick around for the Derby viewing party on the Apron – the outdoor screen is so large, you’ll feel like you are at Churchhill Downs. Following the races, cover band Darling Nikki will perform.
Refreshing mint juleps, food specials and other drink specials will be on the menu.
And, what’s the Kentucky Derby without fashionable hats? Registration for the The Meadows’ Annual Hat contest goes from 2-3 p.m., preliminary rounds take place at 3 and 4:30 p.m., with the final round occurring at 6:15 p.m.
Make mint juleps at home!
Ingredients:
2 ounces of your favorite Kentucky Bourbon (The Meadows Casino recommends Bulleit or Basil Hayden’s Rye)
1/4 ounce simple syrup
Dash of Angostura bitters
Fresh mint sprig for garnish
Directions:
Put the bourbon, simple syrup and bitters in a julep tin. Fill it halfway with crushed ice. Stir with a bar spoon, churning the ice as you go for about 10 seconds (hold the tin by the rim so that the entire tin can frost up). Add more crushed ice to fill the tin two-thirds full and stir until the tin is completely frosted. Add more ice to form a cone above the rim. Garnish with a fresh mint bouquet in the center of the ice and serve with a straw.
Enjoy!
