Dwight Smith Jr. hooked a two-run homer into the first row of seats down the right-field line and drove in four runs, leading the Baltimore Orioles past the Red Sox 8-1 in Boston’s annual Patriots’ Day game.
Baltimore salvaged a split of the four-game series. It had lost nine of its previous 11 games and was 4-21 in its last 25 against Boston.
Chris Davis also hit a two-run homer – much further into the right-field bleachers – and Renato Nunez had three hits with an RBI single.
Davis halted a record 0-for-54 stretch Saturday, the longest for a position player. He started the season 0 for 33.
Dan Straily (1-1) rebounded from a rough debut start with Baltimore, giving up a run on two hits in five innings. He was tagged for five runs and eight hits over 3 1/3 innings by Oakland last week.

Late-arriving Puig misses ring presentation: Old habits apparently die hard when Yasiel Puig is back in Los Angeles.
He was late arriving to Dodger Stadium Monday in his return to the city where he awed fans with his cannon of an arm and infuriated management with his inconsistent efforts on the field.
The Cuban star who now plays for the Cincinnati Reds missed receiving his National League Championship Series ring in person from Dodgers owner Mark Walter and other front-office personnel.
They presented the jewelry to former Dodgers Matt Kemp, Alex Wood and Kyle Farmer during an informal gathering outside the visitors’ clubhouse.
“Just the six of us sharing some stories, saying hello and more so us thanking them for what they did to help us accomplish what we accomplished last year and wishing them well,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.
Asked about missing the gathering, Puig said, “He can send the ring to my locker or give it to me at batting practice. He can give it to me in person, I don’t care.”
Roberts chuckled when asked if he was happy to be on the other team now when Puig’s name comes up.
“Yeah, I am happy,” he said, smiling.
