WVU signs

2 JC guards

West Virginia has added a pair of junior college guards to its men’s basketball roster for next season.

Coach Bob Huggins announced Wednesday the signings of 6-4 players Sean McNeil and Tajzmel “Taz” Sherman.

McNeil, a native of Union, Kentucky, averaged 29.7 points and more than four three-point field goals made per game as a freshman at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio. He also averaged six rebounds per contest.

Sherman averaged nearly 26 points per game as a sophomore at Collin College in McKinney, Texas. The native of Missouri City, Texas, also had nearly five rebounds and assists per game.

They join Oscar Tshiebwe and Miles McBride in this year’s recruiting class for the Mountaineers.

Pirates prospect suspended

Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop prospect Ji-Hwan Bae has been suspended for 30 games for violating minor league baseball’s domestic violence policy.

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred announced the suspension will start Thursday.

Bae agreed to a minor league contract in March 2018 for a $1.2 million signing bonus. He was accused by a former girlfriend of domestic violence, South Korean media and The Athletic reported last May.

The 19-year-old batted .271 with 13 RBIs and 10 steals in 35 games last year with the rookie level Gulf Coast Pirates. He was 4 for 21 (.190) with three RBIs in five games this season for Class A Greensboro of the South Atlantic League.

College baseball

Jacob McCaskey drove in the goa-ahead run in the sixth inning, lifting California to a 5-2 non-conference win over Charleston (W.Va.) at Wild Things Park.

  • Marietta scored five runs over the final three innings to defeat Washington & Jefferson 6-3 in a non-conference game at Ross Memorial Park. Adam Moore drove in two runs for the Presidents (19-9).

In the majors

Cole Hamels pitched seven strong innings and the Chicago Cubs completed a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins with a 6-0 win Wednesday night.

  • A.J. Pollock hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers tied the major league record by homering in their 32nd consecutive home game during a 3-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
  • Michael Wacha cooled off NL MVP Christian Yelich, Matt Carpenter and Marcell Ozuna each went deep, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-3 to avoid being swept.
  • Jake Arrieta pitched neatly into the ninth inning, Scott Kingery and Cesar Hernandez hit solo homers and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets, 3-2.
  • Brett Gardner hit a grand slam off Ryan Brasier in the seventh inning for his 100th career home run, and the New York Yankees rallied to beat the Boston Red Sox 5-3 for a two-game sweep of the reeling World Series champions.
  • Carlos Carrasco rebounded from one of his worst starts with 12 strikeouts, Jake Bauers hit a solo homer and the Cleveland Indians beat the Seattle Mariners 1-0 to complete a three-game sweep.
  • Fiercely energetic Tim Anderson spiked his bat to celebrate a home run and Kansas City’s Brad Keller responded by drilling him with a fastball, setting off a benches-clearing fracas in the Royals’ 4-3, 10-inning victory over the Chicago White Sox.

AAF files for bankruptcy

The Alliance of American Football is officially out of business.

The eight-team league that folded after eight games of its initial season ceased all business operations and filed for bankruptcy Wednesday.

Founded by Pro Football Hall of Fame executive Bill Polian and TV/film producer Charlie Ebersol, the AAF was hoping to become a developmental league.

However, a few weeks after Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon became the Alliance’s majority owner, he shut it down, citing an inability to reach agreement with the NFL players’ union on the availability of players.
