The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team won its third game in three days over Geneva by sweeping a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park.
The Presidents defeated Geneva 12-8 in Game 1 and 8-0 Game 2, combining 27 hits and a pair of strong pitching performances.
In Game 1, W&J (17-1 in the PAC, 22-9 overall) gave starting pitcher Santino Platt an early lead with runs in each of the first three innings. The Presidents scored once in the first, five runs in the second and added three in the third.
Left fielder James Artale led the Presidents in the opener by going 4-for-4 with four RBI and scoring three times, including his three-run homer to extend the lead to 9-0 in the bottom of the third inning.
Josh Crummer and Adam Moore each had three hits for W&J. Platt didn’t allow a run over four innings. He struck out three.
In Game 2, W&J starter Garret Harstine improved his record to 5-1 on the season by pitching six scoreless innings. He only surrendered one hit and struck out five.
Leading 2-0 after four innings, the Presidents scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Crummer hit a two-run double and Spencer Howell hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run.
Geneva falls to 1-16 in the PAC and 6-21 overall.
- Making up a pair of games scheduled for Friday, California University split a doubleheader against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division foe Seton Hill at Wild Things Park.
The Vulcans fell 5-2 in the first game then bounced back for a 4-1 victory in Game 2.
In Game 1, California (12-5 in the PSAC, 27-9 overall) failed to solve the top of the Griffins’ lineup. Five of the top six in their batting order had at least one hit and one RBI.
A pair of run-scoring singles from Tommy Pellis and Isaiah DiAndreth in the first inning gave Seton Hill a lead it wouldn’t surrender.
Patrick Brogan went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Cal.
In Game 2, Corey Fogle and Brogan each hit a pair of singles as the Vulcans broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning with three runs. Fogle’s single through the left side of the infield scored Nico Marchetti to give California a 2-1 lead. Two batter later, Brogan hit a two run single to extend the lead to 4-1.
Vulcans’ pitcher Bradyn Kail pitched a seven-inning complete game for the victory. He gave up one run on five hits and struck out three.
The split keeps California in second place in the PSAC West Division standings behind first-place Gannon.
