PSAC releases
preseason poll
The California University football team was picked to finish second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Standings, which was announced by the league at their annual media day.
It is the third consecutive season the Vulcans were picked to finish second.
Cal finished 5-2 in the divisional play and 7-4 overall last year. Fourth-year head coach Gary Dunn returns 18 starters from last year’s team that won seven of its last nine games after opening the year with back-to-back road losses.
Slippery Rock is the preseason favorite to win the PSAC West with six first-place votes. Cal and Indiana University both received one first-place vote. Indiana was picked to finish third.
In the PSAC East, West Chester is the preseason favorite, earning six first-place votes. The Golden Rams played in the PSAC Championship for the third time in four years last season. Shepherd, who is new to the league, received the two other first-place votes.
Cal will open the season on the road against Saint Anselm in New Hampshire Friday, Sept. 6.
Carter returning
to Hawks
Vince Carter is putting off retirement for at least one more season.
A person familiar with the situation says Carter is returning to the Atlanta Hawks for his record 22nd season in the NBA.
The person confirmed that the 42-year-old Carter has agreed to terms with the Hawks. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been announced.
The agreement was first reported by ESPN.
Carter will continue to serve as a mentor to some of the NBA’s most promising young talent, including first-round picks D’Andre Hunter and Cam Reddish. He’ll also eclipse the record shared with Robert Parish, Kevin Garnett, Kevin Willis and recently retired Dirk Nowitzki for most seasons in the NBA.
He entered the league in 1998 – the same year Young was born – as the fifth overall pick out of North Carolina. He sparked a wave of “Vinsanity” in Toronto, where his high-flying style made him one of the league’s top players. He began a run of 10 straight seasons where he was selected to the All-Star Game appearances and averaged more than 20 points a game.
Carter showed last season that he’s still got some playing skills, as well. He played 76 games in his first year with the Hawks, including nine starts, while averaging 17.5 minutes and 7.4 points per contest.
