Avella ousted in quarterfinals, begin waiting game

AMBRIDGE – Sophomore guard Alexis Robison scored 18 of her game-high 25 points in the first half and fueled a big first-quarter onslaught as second-seeded Rochester cruised to a 70-29 victory over Avella in the WPIAL Class A girls basketball quarterfinals Friday night at Ambridge High School.
The win sends Rochester (17-6) to the semifinals Tuesday night against Quigley Catholic, a 71-55 upset winner over Greensburg Central Catholic in the quarterfinals.
Avella’s record dropped to 17-6 and the Eagles’ run in the WPIAL playoffs reached an end but the season could continue. If Rochester wins Tuesday, then Avella will qualify for the PIAA playoffs as either the fifth- or sixth-place team from the WPIAL. The top six advance to the state tournament.
Rochester, the Section 1 champion, put the game out of reach for Avella in the first quarter as the Rams forged a commanding 28-4 lead. Both teams scored 14 points in the second quarter and the teams went to the locker room at halftime with Rochester leading 42-18. Robison made four of her five three-pointers in the first half.
Rochester outscored Avella 22-6 in the third quarter to open a 40-point advantage.
Jasmine Mack scored 13 points for Rochester and freshman Corynne Hauser had 11.
Bess Lengauer had a strong game for Avella, scoring a team-high 16 points, including 12 in the first half.
