W&J advances to PAC women’s basketball title game

LATROBE – Maria Lawhorne came off the bench and scored 18 of her game-high 21 points in the second half as Washington & Jefferson pulled away for a 54-43 victory over cold-shooting Grove City in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference women’s basketball tournament semifinals Friday night at Saint Vincent College.
The win moves second-seeded Washington & Jefferson (19-7) into today’s championship game against Saint Vincent (22-4), a 76-69 winner over Thiel in the other semifinal. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.
W&J and Saint Vincent split their two-game regular-season series with each team winning on the other club’s home court.
Grove City (16-11) led 22-18 at halftime and 30-28 late in the third quarter before a three-point play by Lawhorne gave W&J the lead and triggered a 9-0 run by the Presidents that extended into the fourth quarter. W&J never trailed again as it held Grove City to 31 percent shooting.
Lawhorne made six of eight shots from the field and was 8-for-10 at the free-throw line.
Danielle Parker followed in the scoring column with 13 points and Hannah Johnston scored 12 points in a reserve role and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. The Presidents’ reserves outscored Grove City’s 35-7.
Kate Balcom led Grove City in scoring with 12 points and Jess Bowen had 10.
