The Washington & Jefferson women’s basketball team will participate in this week’s ECAC Division III tournament.
The Presidents will take host Penn State Altoona in the first round Wednesday. Tipoff is 7 p.m. at Henry Memorial Center.
W&J enters with a 19-8 record and was 13-3 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Penn State Altoona is 12-13 overall record and was 10-8 league in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. The Lions lost in the first round of the AMCC tournament last week.
This will be the 15th postseason appearance in program history for W&J and eighth in an ECAC tournament. This also marks the sixth postseason appearance in the seven years.
Cabrini is the top overall seed. The Cavaliers received a first-round bye and will host the weekend of the championship.
Wild Things sign
2 pitchers
The Wild Things announced Monday the signing of right-handers pitchers Brandon Nylin and Elliot Forde for the upcoming season. Both players were signed out of the California Winter League per the partnership with the Frontier League.
Nylin joins Washington as one of the winningest pitchers in Indiana Southeast history. Primarily a starter, he was 15-3 over two seasons with five complete games and two shutouts. As a senior, he posted a 2.39 ERA, throwing 94 innings and striking out 80 yet surrendering only 69 hits. He signed on with the Roswell Invaders of the independent Pecos League and struck out 53 batters in 44 innings while sporting a 2.84 ERA and 4-1 record.
Forde played at Misericordia University and helped the program to the NCAA Division III World Series. As a senior, Forde was 7-0 in 11 starts. The Pennsylvania native signed with the French Professional Baseball League in 2018.
“Brandon and Elliot share a common trait: winning backgrounds. Both come from programs predicated on winning and both were key factors of that success,” said Wild Things general amanager Tony Buccilli. “We look to see Nylin compete for a meaningful spot in the rotation. His season with Roswell gives us something to build on and we are excited to see his focus shift to pro ball full-time. Elliot has some more versatility. He has been a successful starter at multiple levels.”
