GIRLS BASKETBALL

Mapletown 37, Carmichaels 19: Taylor Dusenberry led all scorers with 14 points as Mapletown defeated Carmichaels, 37-19, in a non-section game.

The Maples, who improve to 6-7 overall, took a 9-1 lead after the first quarter and led 24-9 at halftime. Abby Antill provided secondary scoring with eight points.

Carmichaels (5-11) was led by Shelby McCann’s five points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Waynesburg 53, Charleroi 47: Trailing by six points entering the fourth quarter, Lucas Garber rallied Waynesburg for a 53-47 comeback victory over Charleroi in a non-section game to snap a six-game losing streak.

Garber scored 10 points in the final eight minutes as Waynesburg (7-8) outscored the Cougars 22-10 in the fourth quarter. Garber scored a game-high 21 points. He was the only player for the Raiders to score in double figures.

Charleroi (8-6), which saw its four-game winning streak come to an end, was paced by 17 points from Lee Zanardini. Joe Caruso also scored 12 points.

The Cougars will try to bounce back when they host Washington Friday night for first place in Class 3A Section 4. Charleroi defeated the Prexies, 60-46, when they played Dec. 14.

California 75, Beth-Center 64: Malik Ramsey scored 21 of his game-high 34 points in the second and third quarters to help California pull away from Beth-Center, 75-64, in a non-section game.

The Trojans built their lead in first half, using Ramsey’s 16 points to take a 30-19 advantage into halftime. Cochise Ryan and Austin Grillo provided a spark in the second half for California with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

It was the fourth consecutive win for California (9-3). 

Beth-Center, which has lost four of its last five, falls to 5-8 overall. J.J. Green and Andrew Bower each scored 20 points for the Bulldogs. Easton McDaniel finished with 16 points.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Wash & Jeff 76, Grove City 60: Danielle Parker made 12 of 14 shots to score a game-high 27 points as Washington & Jefferson won its ninth consecutive game by defeating Grove City, 76-60, in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

The win gives the Presidents sole possession of second place. Grove City falls to third. Both trail first-place Saint Vincent, which is undefeated in conference play.

Parker, a Canon-McMillan graduate, was 3-for-3 from behind the arc and led both teams with eight rebounds to help W&J (7-1, 11-5) take a 37-21 lead into halftime.

The only other player to score in double figures for the Presidents, who shot 55 percent from the field, was Maria Lawhorne with 14.

Jess Bowen led Grove City (5-3, 10-7) with 14 points. Kate Balcom added 13 for the Wolverines.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Pitt-Johnstown 95, California 72: Jared Jakubick and Caiden Landis combined to score 44 points as Pitt-Johnstown cruised to a 95-72 win over California in a PSAC West Division game.

Jakubick, who came off the bench, made seven of 10 three-pointers to score a game-high 23 points. He was the only threat from the perimeter for UPJ (6-3, 11-5). Outside of Jakubick, the Mountain Cats went 1-for-13 from behind the arc.

Landis scored 21 points and had nine assists.

The Vulcans trailed 43-30 at halftime, a deficit created in the opening four minutes of the game when UPJ took a 12-0 lead. They never trimmed the margin back to single digits.

California (4-5, 6-9) had three players score in double figures, led by Collin MacAdams’ 20-point night. Brent Pegram scored 16 points and Zyan Collins finished with 14.

WRESTLING

Bentworth 51, West Greene 24: Noah Westin had the only first-period pin as Bentworth dominated late in bouts to earn the final postseason spot in Class AA Section 1B with a 51-24 victory over West Greene.

Westin (132) opened the match pinned his opponent in 37 seconds to give the Bearcats an early lead. West Martin (145) and heavyweight Lorenzo Axton both won by fall in the second period. Shane Barber (170) and Bryce Hook (113) helped seal the victory with third-period pins.

West Greene faced an early deficit, losing five of the six opening bouts.

The only wins for the Pioneers came from three forfeits and a pin in 32 seconds from Kolin Walker at 182.

Burgettstown 66, Chartiers-Houston 15: Winning the first five bouts, first-place Burgettstown rolled to a 66-15 win over Chartiers-Houston in Class AA Section 1A.

The Blue Devils, who will host the section team tournament next Wednesday, won six bouts by forfeit and dominated in the lower weights.

Burgettstown’s Shane Ilgenfritz (106), Hunter Guiddy (120), Austin Ryan (132) and Turner Lehman (160) all earned pins. Both falls from Ilgenfritz and Lehman came in the first period.

Ty Mazutis (126) and Austin Keslock (182) earned the only two pins for the Bucs.
