At the Meadows
Brent “Clipper” Davis was razor sharp at The Meadows Saturday, keeping Beatrice alive outside as the duo won a $10,000 leg of the C.K.G. Billings Amateur Trot.
Davis and Beatrice were out before the half to start their sustained drive . . . and even wider in the stretch.
“At the three-eighths, a guy behind me came early, and I just wanted to make sure I had her out with a little room,” Davis said. “I had to come three wide in the last turn, which usually isn’t a very good spot. But she’s really a professional horse. She does a good job.”
The 5-year-old daughter of Photo Color-Lima Simplicity had enough in the tank to hold off the Lightning Lane charge of Bob “The Lumberman” Troyer and Ubanji by a neck in 1:57.3. Alesha “The Hoosier Hotshot” Binkley (Hititoutofthepark) and Stephen “You’re Never Too” Oldford completed the Top 4.
Colts’ Kelly suspended
The NFL has suspended Indianapolis Colts quarterback Chad Kelly for two games for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.
Kelly signed with the Colts on May 20 – after pleading guilty in March to a second-degree trespassing charge. He had been arrested in October after entering the home of a man and woman he did not know following a Halloween party.
It was the latest legal issue for the nephew of Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly.
Chad Kelly can participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games and can return to Indy’s active roster on Sept. 16.
Long jumper
faces ban
American long jumper and sprinter Jarrion Lawson faces a lengthy ban after eating what he maintains was contaminated meat.
His agent, Paul Doyle, told the Associated Press on Friday that Lawson is expected to receive a four-year ban from the Athletics Integrity Unit, which handles doping issues in track and field. Doyle said they’ll appeal the soon-to-be-announced decision.
Lawson has been suspended since August. He’s considered a strong medal contender for next year’s Tokyo Games.
Baylor catcher sets NCAA record
Baylor’s Shea Langeliers set an NCAA Baseball Tournament record with 11 runs batted in as the Bears defeated Omaha 24-6 on Saturday and eliminated the Mavericks from the Los Angeles Regional.
The previous record was 10 RBIs, which was shared by Vanderbilt’s Connor Kaiser (2018) and Miami’s Kevin Brown (2001). The junior catcher went 5 for 6, including three home runs. More than half of his RBIs came in the sixth and seventh inning with a three-run double and three-run homer.
Baylor scored a run in every inning but the eighth and had 23 hits, 13 of which went for extra bases. Josh Bissonette added four hits while Andy Thomas, Richard Cunningham and Nick Loftin had three apiece as 10 Baylor players got at least one hit.
- Isaac Collins hit a solo homer in the top of the third inning, giving No. 2 seed Creighton an early lead it would not relinquish in a 4-1 victory that eliminated defending national champion Oregon State.
The Bluejays (39-12) play the loser of Saturday’s second game between No. 4 seed Cincinnati and No. 3 seed Michigan Sunday in another elimination game.
Oregon State (36-20-1), the No. 16 national seed, was the first national seed eliminated in the 2019 NCAA Tournament. After losing to Cincinnati 7-6 in their first game Friday, the top-seeded Beavers were in the difficult position of needing four straight wins to advance to a super regional.
