The Pirates played two spring training games Friday in Florida, didn’t win either contest but lost only one.
That’s because a split-squad game against the Toronto Blue Jays ended in a 1-1 tie. Pittsburgh’s other split-squad team lost 7-3 to the Philadelphia Phillies.
J.T. Realmuto, among Philadelphia’s offseason acquisitions, had his first home run and triple of spring training.
Philadelphia scored five runs in the first two innings against Pittsburgh starter Nick Kingham, who gave up six hits and a walk in three innings.
Pirates catcher Jacob Stallings drove in two runs and homered in the fifth inning. The other Pittsburgh run scored on a homer by minor leaguer Jerrick Suiter in the ninth inning.
Pittsburgh cleanup hitter Jose Osuna went 0 for 3 and is batting .077.
Toronto scored in the bottom of the eighth to salvage the 1-1 tie. The run came off minor leaguer Eduardo Vera. Pittsburgh starter Rookie Davis pitched two hitless innings with three strikeouts. Colin Moran drove in the Pirates’ run.
Toronto’s Aaron Sanchez made his first start and allowed only a walk in two scoreless innings. Newcomer Clayton Richard followed with two shutout innings.
